MEETING DATE: JULY 22, 2009
SUBJECT: Youth Advisory Committee Goals for 2009-2010
Report Prepared by Frank Luna, Recreation Supervisor
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and identify goals for the 2009-2010 term
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: A major function of the Youth Advisory Committee is to provide
input to Staff regarding recreational activities and special events for youth and teens in the community
through participation in the program planning and decision making process. To establish the framework,
the Youth Advisory Committee Bylaws and Rules of Procedure contain the following general
responsibilities.
VIII. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COMMITTEE
A. Provide input on youth services and programming to the Parks and Community Services
Commission, City Council and City Staff.
• B. Address issues that affect youth in the community.
C. Assist with the promotion and implementation of youth activities.
D. Generate an annual report on the progress of the Youth Advisory Committee.
Additionally, Committee Members are expected to attend all regular meetings and subcommittee
meetings as assigned; attend the activities planned and sponsored by the Youth Advisory
Committee; and promote youth activities and provide support for successful implementation of
youth activities and events.
It is important to establish goals so Committee Members can describe what they want to accomplish and
how to get it done. If goals are not established, it may be difficult for Committee Members to stay
focused and accomplish what is most important to the group. A goal describes what a specific activity or
program is about and what it will accomplish. Following were the goals from 2008-2009:
GOAL 1 Coordinate a fundraising activity selling wristbands that read, "Bearing is Caring."
COPIES TO:
ITEM NO.: 7.1
G:\Y AC\09\1 OA GENDASTMNT\7.1
Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to purchase teddy bears for children in local
hospitals.
This goal was partially accomplished. YAC Members had difficulty selling the wristbands. As a
result, Committee Members sold enough wristbands just to cover the cost of the product.
GOAL 2 Coordinate a Video Game Tournament. Any proceeds collected will be donated to a
specific charity to be determined.
This goal was partially accomplished. YAC Members planned to contract the "Video Gamer Bus"
at the Dubtown Jam event. The bus has video games which would allow participants to play. YAC
Members determined that the rental of the bus was not cost effective. YAC Members coordinated a
cake walk at the event instead of the video tournament as a fundraiser. Donations were designated
for the Alameda County SPCA.
GOAL 3 Establish a YAC booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival. Any proceeds will be donated to a
Specific charity to be determined.
This goal was accomplished. YAC Members had a prize wheel and offered pictures with Glen the
Guide at the St. Patrick's Day Festival. Donations were requested. Donations were designated for
the St. Judes Hospital and the Wheel Chair Foundation. $125 in donations were collected.
In the process of developing goals, the Youth Advisory Committee should consider issues and interests of
Dublin youth and teens.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report and identify goals for the 2009-2010
term.
