DESCRIPTION: The Parks and Community Services Department provides activities
to teens in the community that enhance their social, intellectual, physical and emotional development.
During the spring 2009 quarter, the Department offered the Student Union program at Wells and Fallon
Middle Schools, various teen special events, and various teen leisure classes. Also, the
DubTownTeens.com website was available,maintained with current information for the community. The
teen website provided information on events, job postings, feature stories, and any other information
regarding teen issues. The following is a summary of the teen programs offered during spring 2009.
Student Union
Student Union, is an after school recreation program designed specifically for middle school students. An
emphasis is placed on academic enrichment and recreation/leisure enrichment. Student Union programs
are held in two eighteen-week sessions at Wells Middle School and Fallon School. The program offers a
variety of fun activities for teens, including educational programs, sporting events, arts and crafts, science
projects and music events. The program also features the popular homework club. The program is held
on Monday from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM and Tuesday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

Teen Events
A variety of teen events are implemented to offer teens in the community a specific activity for their age
group. Five events were offered: Tri-Valley Job Fair, Dive ip Movie, Middle School Dance, 5th Grade
Mixer and Dub Town Jam.

Dive In Movie
The Dive In Movie event took place 6/12/09 at the Dublin Swim Center. 40 teens attended the event.
The movie "Transformers"was the featured film. The teens who braved the weather enjoyed the movie.
Middle School Dance
A spring formal middle school dance took place at the Shannon Community Center on 5/1/09. A.DJ
provided the music. Hip Hop music was the genre that the teens enjoyed the most. Over 45 students
attended the dance. The weather was rainy and cold,but the teens had fun and loved the new facility.
Tri-Valley Teen Job Fair
The cities of Dublin, Pleasanton, and San Ramon partnered with the Women's Club of Dublin and San
Ramon to conduct a Tri-Valley Teen Job Fair. Over 900 teens attended the event, which was held on a
Saturday March 28, 2009 at the Shannon Community Center. The event featured over 30 local employers
who were recruiting onsite. Participants could take part in short"mock interviews"with adults from the
community. Following the mock interview the teens received feedback on their interview in preparation
for when they have to interview for a real position. Also,there was a workshop focusing on resume
writing. The event also gave the City an opportunity to recruit for the many part-time recreation positions.
Dub Town Jam
This event was held outdoors at Emerald Glen Park on May 15th. Over 150 teens attended the event. The
event included music, pie, and hot dog eating contests and cake walk, inflatable attractions, free hot dogs,
chips and drinks and a 3•on 3 basketball competition. Dublin Police- Youth Services Officers assisted in
supervising at the event. The Youth Advisory Committee members also helped in planning the event.
5TH Grade Mixer
The event took.place at the Library Community Room on Friday May 29th. Three families with their child
going into the 6th grade attended. Light snacks were provided. Staff member Angela Gamez conducted a
roundtable type discussion regarding resources available to them as their child transitions to middle
school. She emphasized the resources the City offers for teens. Programs highlighted were Student
Union, monthly teen special events, Total Recreation Live summer program, Youth Advisory Committee,
and teen website. Parents were also provided contacts for the Schools and the Dublin Police Youth
Resource Officers.
Teen Concert
The concert took place at the Shannon Community Center on Friday April 24th from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
The teen bands who performed were "Devils Angels", "Shatter fish", and "Auora Awakening". These
local bands are comprised of students from Dublin and San Ramon. Over 75 people enjoyed the concert
provide by these bands. The music genre provided by the bands ranged from classic rock and roll to
alternative rock.

Teen Leisure classes
Various leisure classes were offered in the spring to serve teens in the community. The classes are taught
by contracted instructors. The majority of the classes were offered as a one time workshop or one week
camp. Classes offered included: Learn to Type for Teens, Wood Working, Teens in the Kitchen Italian
Dinner, Working the Knife (food carving), Vegetarian 101, Shop tools &training, 4141 Skateboard class,
Basic Cake decorating, Leader in Training class, and First Aid/CPR.

Teen Website
The goal of providing the website www.dubtownteens.com is to provide a means for "getting the word
out" to teens about the many things to do in Dublin, from recreational and entertainment activities to jobs
and volunteer opportunities. The teen website provides information on teen issues, events, job postings,
feature stories, and any other information the Youth Advisory Committee believes important to
communicate to the youth of Dublin. Following is a summary of the use of the website by the public.

The Youth Advisory Committee and staff will work together to find ways to improve on marketing and
advertising the teen website to youth in the community. Staff will research the possibility of utilizing
social networks such as "Facebook" and"Twitter"to advertise the site.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report.
