PLEDGE OFALLEGIANCE Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chairperson Minor. ROLL CALL. . Committee Members (CM) Present: Asian Brown, Daniel Heddy, Van Le, Annie Arcuri, Justin Minor, Alex Rogers, Christian Heinz, Emily Edlund, Taylor King, Julia Pak, Alda Pande, Isabella Europa, Brooke Brunckhorst, Katie Strangeland, Cam Tran Committee Members Absent: Bre'Auna Pontiflet Liaison Present: Joey Van Loon, Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Representative Adult Representative: Jenna Heath Staff Present: Frank Luna, Angela Gamez, Officer Ranvir Sanghera ORAL COMMUNICATIONS-None • MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING- October 22, 2008 • ON A MOTION BY CM ARCURI SECONDED BY CM HEDDY AND BY UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE COMMITTEE VOTED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF OCTOBER 22, 2008. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS-None UNFINISHED BUSINESS—None NEW BUSINESS : Publicity Subcommittee for Teen Special Events Staff Member Gamez solicited volunteers to serve on a.Publicity Subcommittee to assist with promoting teen special events. The Subcommittee was encouraged to meet two to three times a month in addition to the monthly Youth Advisory Committee meetings. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to assisting Staff with creating flyers, providing innovative ideas to promote events, distributing flyers at schools and businesses and other administrative duties requested by Staff. Committee Members Arcuri, Pande, Rogers, Tran, Brunckhorst, and Strangeland volunteered to serve on the Publicity Subcommittee. Ideas generated by the Committee Members for advertising events included involving the marketing committee at Dublin High School to help, submitting ads in the Dublin Shield,school newspaper, making commercials or slides for the Dublin High Video Bulletin, and creating an email list of teens interested in participating in City sponsored teen events. Dublin Tree LiihtinR Ceremony Staff Member Gamez solicited Committee Members to volunteer at the Dublin Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Civic Center on December 4, 2008 from 6:15 PM to 8:30 PM. Local schools will be performing and Committee Members are needed to assist. Committee Members will also assist Staff to make an assembly line of snacks, pass out programs and glow sticks, watch doors, and help out when needed. Staff Member Gamez advised that it will be cold and suggested wearing warm clothes.. • • • • Youth Advisory Committee Objectives for 2008-2009 After some discussion, the Youth Advisory Committee Members agreed that their objectives for the 2008- 2009 term are to coordinate a "Bearing is Caring" fundraiser, offering a Video Game Tournament, and to establish a Youth Advisory Committee booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival offering various activities such as a spinning wheel for prizes. Donations collected from these events will be donated to various charities selected by the Committee. Committee Member Edlund will be the lead Committee Member of the "Bearing is Caring" project. Vice Chairperson Arcuri and Committee Members Heinz, Heddy, Pande, and Adult Representative Heath will assist in the "Bearing is Caring" Subcommittee. The Subcommittee will establish meeting times to discuss 'resources, project duration, and selection of the charity to donate the proceeds. Committee Member Brown will be the lead Committee Member for the Video Game Tournament Subcommittee. Committee Members Pak, Le, King, and Tran will serve on the Subcommittee. The Subcommittee will establish meeting times to discuss resources, possible venues for the event, time and date of event, and select a charity to donate any collected proceeds. Chairperson Minor will lead the St. Patrick's Day Festival Booth Subcommittee. Committee Members Edlund, Strangeland, Rogers, Pontiflet and Parks and Community Services Commission Liason-Van Loon will assist in the planning the booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival. The Subcommittee will establish meeting times to discuss resources for prizes, ideas for games at the booth, and select a charity to donate any collected proceeds. Staff Members Gamez and Luna reminded Committee Members that if the objectives are not established, it will be difficult for Committee Members to stay on task and complete their goals. OTHER BUSINESS Vice Chairperson Arcuri informed Committee Members that when the Dublin High School Library is torn down, the books will be relocated to a classroom, but study and computer space will no longer be available. This will be especially disappointing for those students who need access to computers, who need space to tutor or study, or who simply need a place to stay until they can be picked up by,a parent. Mayor Tim Sbranti; who is a teacher at Dublin High School, mentioned to students that three portables classrooms on campus could be used for after school recreation programs for high school students. Vice Chairperson Arcuri asked if City Staff could supervise the recreation rooms. Committee Member Tran suggested that Dublin High students over the age of 18 could act as building attendants at this possible program. Staff Member Gamez replied she would discuss this idea with the Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services and report back at a future meeting. • Committee Member Brown said he went to a seminar about the "40 Developmental Assets" designed to give youth the ability to set a foundation.for a successful future. Staff Member Luna gave a brief description of the 40 Developmental Assets. Committee Member Europa, suggested that other youth • should be able to see the presentation and perhaps the Committee can set the foundations for setting up clubs at school. Jennifer Rousch, the coordinator of the 40 Developmental Assets seminar, will be contacted by Committee Member Brown to set up the presentation at a future Youth Advisory Committee meeting: Staff Member Luna stated to Committee Members that the Shannon Community Center will tentatively be open to the public at the end of February. Once the Community Center opens, Staff plans to schedule some Youth Advisory Committee activities and events at this site. • Staff Member Gamez informed Committee Members that she will take tours of various recreation centers in the bay area to get an idea of what works or doesn't work for a teen lounge. A new aquatic center, gym, and teen lounge are planned to be included in the future Emerald Glen Recreation and Aquatic Complex. The plans include space for a teen lounge.
