AGENDA STATEMENT
MEETING DATE:July 10, 2003
SUBJECT: Heritage Center Programs
ATTACHMENTS: Flyer for programs
RECOMMENDATION: Approve programs or provide alternate direction.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: In the Fiscal Year 2003-2004 budget $1,100 has been allocated per
program.
DESCRIPTION: As part of the goals for 2003-2004 for the Heritage Center the
Dublin City Council rated as a High Priority: "sponsor programs and exhibits at the Heritage Center that
will emphasize Dublin's culture and heritage". The three programs proposed are Mexican Folklorico
Crafts, Americana Holiday Workshop and Irish Faeries & Folklore (please see Attachment 1). Each of
these programs is designed to educate families in a fun way on Dublin's rich heritage and traditions here
in the valley.
Publicity for the events will be through the Guide, the newspaper and flyers throughout the community.
Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director will lead the crafts programs and appropriate entertainment will
be hired for each of the programs.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the Heritage and Cultural Arts
Commission approve the programs or provide alternate direction.

Dublin Heritage Center
Folk Traditions Series 2003-2004
Folklore and folk life classes are an important because they deal with why and how traditions develop
in different cultures. They teach us about a culture through its history, literature, customs, language,
food, and understanding of nature.
Mexican Folklorico Crafts -- Dia de los Muertos

Learn about the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead.

I Make traditional Reredros (story boxes), and Calacas (happy skeletons!)
Play Dia de los Muertos Bingo (a great way to learn vocabulary!) and enjoy
Hot Chocolate and Pan de Muertos.

Create folksy holiday crafts that come from nature and what is available in the
season... just like the early Americans did. Make gingerbread ornaments,
scented pinecones, popcorn & cranberry garland, cinnamon apple ornaments,
and orange pomander. Hot Cider and warm gingerbread in the historic Murray
School House will make the old-fashioned holiday atmosphere complete.

Do you believe in Faeries? The Celts did in ancient times. Thanks to Ireland's rich
heritage of legends and strong oral tradition the magical world of Faeries is passed
on today. Come learn about these mystical beings and make Fairy Necklaces and
" ;": Fairy Castles. An Irish Storyteller will spin faerie folklore while you cozy up to tea
and traditional Irish Soda Bread in the Murray School.
