ATTACHMENTS: Survey of area museum of hours, days and fees. RECOMMENDATION: Receive presentation by Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director and approve new days and hours of operation. FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: In 2000-2001-, one of the high priority City Council goals was to "evaluate what hours the Heritage Center should be open to maximize public visits and increase open hours". The Heritage and Cultural Arts Assessment completed by AMS Planning addressed.the hours of operation for the Heritage Center. Upon recommendation the hours of operation were changed to Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m.,to 4:00 p.m. In 2001- 2002 the Heritage Center added Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. as additional hours of operation. Upon review of the Heritage Center Museum hours and days of operation in the past year the average attendance during the week is 2 per day (excluding group tours). For the weekend hours the average attendance is 10 per day. There appears to be no evidence that keeping the Heritage Center open in the evening until 6:00 p.m. is being taken advantage of by the general public. The proposed new hours and days of operation would be Wednesday— Sunday, 1:00 p.m. — 4 p.m. This allows for the museum to be open during school hours which appears to be the largest consistent audience. School tours and groups are accommodated by appointment any day of the week, but this would allow for staffing during school hours on a regular basis. The proposed new days would be consecutive and also easier for the general public to remember and the new weekend hours would provide consistent service for the wedding receptions at the church which are predominately on Saturdays. Under the suggested hours of operation, the Museum would then be open a total of 156 days per year and become eligible for grant funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services. IMLS funds nonprofit organizations that: • Care for and own or use tangible objects, • Exhibit them on a regular basis, • Are open to the public 120 days or more annually, and • Have at least one full-time paid or volunteer staff person or the equivalent. It is the recommendation of Staff that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission adjust the hours as presented.
