SUBJECT: Heritage Center Programs &Exhibits

FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: As part of the goals for 2003-2004 for the Heritage Center the
Dublin City Council rated as a High Priority: "sponsor programs and exhibits at the Heritage Center that
will emphasize Dublin's culture and heritage". As part of the 2004-2005 Budget these programs will
move from a Higher Service Level to the Current Service Level.
Staff is proposing the following workshops and exhibits for the upcoming fiscal year:
Harvest Time-October 2004
Workshop:.Participants will learn about various methods of preserving and bringing produce to market by
peeling apples, pressing fruit and designing their own crate and can labels. They can also sample dried
fruits,jellies and juices.
Exhibit: Beautiful and colorful crate labels expressed the bounty of local farms. On display will be a
wide variety of labels from the tri-valley region and California.
Homespun Holiday-December 11,2004
Workshop: Participants will celebrate the holidays with by making folksy crafts, listening to storytelling
and Victorian carolers in this old fashioned setting. Ornaments will be made from old fashioned, natural
materials such as gingerbread, oranges, spice, pinecones and popcorn. Refreshments will include hot
cider and gingerbread. This will be the third year this program is offered.
Popular Images of African American Heritage-February 2005
Workshop: Participants will make their own fabric "Mammy Doll" the beloved African
• American icon. A storyteller will tell traditional African American tales. Corri bread and
a+ other traditional southern refreshments served.
Exhibit: Traditional folk art and commercial African American images, such as the
:s mammy figure,will be on display.

Local Historic Architecture-Date to be determined pending CIP Exhibit Project Schedule
Workshop: Participants will make their own models of the Murray School House
and Old St. Raymond's Church.

`., - Exhibit: Scale models and rendering of local historic buildings will be on display.
}�' E 10114414,p, Artist Gary Winter's remarkable drawings of local historic sites and model builder
Richard Gorthy's work will be on display.
Each of these programs is designed to educate families in a fun way on Dublin's rich heritage and
traditions here in the valley.
Publicity for the events will be through the Guide, the newspaper and flyers throughout the community.
The Heritage Center Director will lead the crafts programs and appropriate entertainment will be hired for
each of the programs.
RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the Heritage and Cultural Arts
Commission approve the workshops and exhibits or provide alternate direction to Staff.
