Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report—2005 2. Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report—2004 RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division develops and implements quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide recreational experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This is accomplished by providing diverse cultural program offerings in the areas of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Following is a summary of programs conducted during fall 2005. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES Cultural Arts Classes serve customers of all ages and cover a wide variety of activities such as Ballet & Tap, Piano, Guitar, Belly Dance, Country Line Dance, Hip Hop, Cheerleading, Cartoon Workshop, Kindermusik, and others. Classes provide an opportunity for participants to attempt new experiences, refine current skills, as well as providing a venue for meeting new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops. In spring 2005, all dance classes that were previously administered by the Parks and Community Services Division were transferred to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division, which was the more appropriate program area. Dance classes offered in 2004 have been included in the 2004 to 2005 registration comparison to demonstrate the actual growth of arts classes over the past two fall quarters. A total of 356 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during fall 2005, which was an increase of 112% over the fall 2004. This is attributable to the addition of many new classes, more diverse cultural program offerings, and a focus on Cultural Arts Classes in the Dublin Guide. The cancellation rate was also 23% lower than 2004. The average registration per class decreased over last year by approximately 3 participants per class, but this can be attributed to participants having many more choices of programs in which to enroll (45 classes in 2005 as opposed to 24 classes in 2004). Popular classes included Country Line Dance, Hip Hop, Ballet, Cartoon Workshop, Beginning Irish Dance, Kindermusik, Belly Dance, and Cheerleading. Attachment 1 is a detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report for fall 2005, which includes a breakdown of the classes offered as well as the registration for each class. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for fall 2004 for comparison purposes. COPIES TO: ITEM NO. 8.2 G:\HERITAGE COMMISSION\AGENDA_STMTS\2005\12-8-05 Fall Quarterly Report.doc REPEAT CLASSES Classes that prove to be popular and have an established participant following are repeated from session to session, as long as the public supports them and the quality of the class is considered satisfactory. Each quarter, evaluations are typically sent out to participants in selected classes to determine if the class curriculum is meeting their expectations. Comments both positive and negative are shared with instructors to provide them with an evaluation tool to improve or maintain the quality of their class offering. This past fall, many classes were again offered as repeat classes due to their popularity. These classes included; Ballet & Tap, Beginning Guitar, Irish Dance, Cartoon Workshop, Boogie with your Baby, Country Line Dance, Cheerleading, and Kindermusik. NEW CLASSES Hip Hop for Youth & Teens: 22 students enrolled in this eight-week session which allowed participants to dance like their favorite "Hip Hop" video artists. Hip Hop is a fast moving street style type of dance made popular by music videos. The classes help dancers loosen up, gain rhythm, and have controlled isolated movements. Hip Hop classes proved popular for young people from ages 6 to 17 years old. Piano Keyboard: Chords &Notes, a new business in Dublin, began offering youth piano classes through the City in the fall. Children learn the basics of playing piano/keyboard through a creative program, which includes playing simple melodies and pre-reading skills. Through activities, ear training and group playing children learn to identify notes on piano/keyboard. A more appealing part of the program is that children are provided one-one attention during class time. Thirteen individual classes were offered in the fall session to children ages 4 &5 years old with a total of 17 participants Belly Dance: A total of 34 participants ages 16 years. and up participated in the fall session of Belly Dance. The four-week class sessions are designed to increase fitness, self-confidence and joy. Participants learn basic steps and dance isolations of women's Raks Sharki, also known as Belly Dancing. They learn to play finger cymbals and dance with a veil. Participants are also invited to attend and perform in student performance parties every quarter.
