DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division develops and implements
quality programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational experiences, encourage healthy
lifestyles and preserve the City's heritage. This is accomplished by providing innovative cultural
programs in the areas of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Following is a summary of programs
conducted during summer 2005.
CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES
Cultural Arts Classes serve, customers of all ages and cover a wide variety of activities such as Ballet &
Tap, Performing Arts Camps, Guitar, Cartoon Workshop, Kindermusik, and others. Classes provide an
opportunity for attempting new experiences or refining current skills as well as providing a venue for
meeting new people and sharing experiences with friends or family members. Cultural Arts Classes are
taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are
more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops. In spring 2005, all dance
classes that were previously administered by the Parks and Community Services Division were transferred
to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division, which was the more appropriate program area. Dance classes
offered in 2004 have been included in the 2004 to 2005 registration comparison to demonstrate the actual
growth of arts classes over the past two summers.
A total of 287 participants registered for Cultural)Arts- Classes during summer 2005, which was an
increase of 105%. This is attributable to the addition of more classes, including two theatre camps, more
diverse cultural program offerings, and a focus and re-positioning of Cultural Arts Classes in the Dublin
Guide. The cancellation rate was also 10% lower then 2004 and the average registration per class
increased over last year. Popular classes included All for Dance Camp, Imagine Performing Arts Camp,
Cartoon Workshop, JazzMasters Workshop, Beginning Irish Dance, and Cheerleading. Attachment 1 is a
detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report, which includes a breakdown of the classes offered as
well as the registration for each class.
JAZZMASTERS WORKSHOP
Brought back by popular demand again this summer, the JazzMasters Workshop offered students an

ages 1,1 to 14 were enrolled in the 10 week program, which culminated in a reception and performance by
the young musicians at the City's final Summer Concert on August 5th. Bruce Forman, the original
creator of the JazzMasters program; directed the performance and did double duty with a performance of
his own as the lead guitarist of the Country/Jazz musical group, Cow Bop.
SUMMER THEATRE CAMPS
Imagine Performing Arts Camp: A new theatre camp for children, ages 4—6 years, was offered for the
first time this summer, under the direction of Imagine Performing Arts (formerly the Dublin Theatre
Company). Two .3-week camps were offered to children with full day and partial day options. The
curriculum included theatre games, improvisation, acting, singing, and movement. The program
culminated in a brief performance where the children performed for their families and friends. In all, 27
students enrolled in the first time summer youth theatre camp.
The Shakespeare Playground: Under the auspices of Dublin's Valley Shakespeare Company, this new
one-week workshop was designed for students 8 to 13 years, who learned stylized classic acting
techniques from a trained Shakespearean actress. Students learned about stage movement, dialogue, stage
fighting, interpretation of text, costumes and props. The 12 students who participated in the class were
given an opportunity to demonstrate what they had learned before their family and friends at the last class.
NEW CLASSES .
Cartoon Workshop: 25 students enrolled in this one-day workshop which allowed participants to learn
how to draw some of their favorite cartoon characters. The class was taught by professional cartoonist
Matthew Luhn, who has been a Pixar Animator and Cartoonist on"Toy Story", "Finding Nemo" and other
productions. This workshop is being offered again this fall, due to popular demand.
Kindermusik Classes:- Two Kindermusik classes entitled;"Kindermusik Our Time" and "Kindermusik
Village" were offered for the first time this summer. Kindermusik Our Time is offered to toddlers 17
months to 3 years and designed for the caregiver and child to share time during weekly music and
movement exercises. Based,on several years of child development research, the program helps children
grow cognitively, musically, physically, and socially. Kindermusik Village serves infants to 16 months
with music, storytelling, rhythms, and lullabies. Parents and guardians get an opportunity to form a special
bond with their child through these interactive exercises. A total of 16 children were enrolled in these first
time classes.
