8.1 Summer Concert Series
Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor John Hartnett advised the Commission that the City is sponsoring Dublin's
11`h Annual Summer Concert Series this coming summer. Five free concerts will be held on Friday evenings,
beginning July 6 and ending August 3, 2007. The concerts are held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. outdoors at the Dublin
Civic Center in the plaza area and are free to the public.
Hartnett indicated he is beginning the process of selection of artists for the 2007 summer series and would like
some input from the Commission on the different types of music that would be preferred.
For the Commission's review, Hartnett compiled a list of bands that have performed at the summer concerts over
the past four years, including attendance figures and the general category of musical style for each band.
Last summer, the Commission suggested a mix of music styles similar to the 2005 Series with genera such as
Reggae, Jazz, Beach Boy Summer Music, R&B, Rock & Roll and Country. Based on the Commission's input, five
bands were contracted to provide entertainment for the Summer 2006 Concert Series, including:
• Aja Vu (attendance 325) — Rhythm & Blues
• Soca Sisters (attendance 250) — Calypso/Reggae
• Stone Soup (attendance 275) — Rock & Roll
• Tom Rigney & Flambeau (attendance 375) — Soul/Cajun
• East Bay Mudd (attendance 350) — Rhythm & Blues - JazzMasters performance before concert.
Commission Comments
Commission members discussed the type of music they would like to see offered at this year's summer concert
series. Suggestions included offering show tunes mixed in with a big band sound, country, rock, R&B, Cajun,
Reggae and Caribbean/Latin. The Commission asked Hartnett to be sure to offer a wide variety of music which

was conducive to dancing. Past rarticipants really seemed to enjoy themst—,; s when they could dance to the
performer's music. Hartnett thanked the Commission for their comments and will begin working on the planning
of the summer concert series for 2007.
8.2 Dublin Fine Arts Foundation — Art Takes Place
Hartnett reviewed with the Commission that in March, 2006, the City Council approved a request from the Dublin
Fine Arts Foundation (DFAF) for $30,000 to provide implementation funds for the "In the Tri-Valley: Art Takes
Place" proposal. Art Takes Place is a year long public art project with participating cities of Dublin, Pleasanton,
and Livermore, promoting public awareness and participation in the arts.
In the past two months, the cities of Livermore and Pleasanton have approved a $30,000 commitment each, for the
Art Takes Place project. Additional funds for the project will be raised from foundations, grants and private
sources. Now that all three cities are committed to Art Takes Place, a Steering Committee has been formed to
assist with various aspects of the project, led by Lynne Baer, Consulting Director for DFAF. The Committee is
comprised of DFAF members, City Staff from all three cities and Arts Commissioners and art representatives from
Pleasanton and Livermore. Heritage & Cultural Arts Commissioner Georgean Vonheeder-Leopold also sits on the
Committee as a DFAF Board Member.
In order to provide equal representation by the Arts Commissions from all three cities, Staff requests that the
Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission either appoint Georgean Vonheeder-Leopold as the Representative for the
Art Takes Place Committee to represent the Commission, and also assign an Alternate, or assign a separate
Representative and Alternate.
ON A MOTION BY CM. ACUFF, SECONDED BY CM. WHITE, AND BY UNIAMOUS VOTE, THE
COMMISSION AGREED TO APPOINT CM. VONHEEDER-LEOPOLD AS THE REPRESENTATIVE TO
THE ART TAKES PLACE STEERING COMMITTEE PROJECT AND APPOINT CHAIR MACK AS THE
ALTERNATE TO THE ART TAKES PLACE STEERING COMMITTEE PROJECT.
