DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division develops and implements
quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide recreational
experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This is accomplished by providing diverse cultural
program offerings in the areas of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Following is a summary of
programs conducted during summer 2006.
CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES:
Cultural Arts Classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of activities such
as Theatre Camps, Dance Camps, Ballet, Piano, Guitar, Country Line Dance, Irish Dance, Drawing and
Painting, Kindermusik, and others. Cultural Arts Classes provide an opportunity for participants to
attempt new experiences, refine current artistic skills, as well as providing a social setting for meeting
new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes
are taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are
more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops.
A total of 297 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during summer 2006, which was an
increase of 3% over the summer 2005. This was consistent with the successful summer registration
numbers posted in 2005, when a significant number of new classes were offered for the first time. The
cancellation rate was 6% higher than 2005 and the average registration per class decreased over last year
by approximately 1.25 participants per class, but this can be attributed to participants having more choices
of programs in which to enroll (47 classes in 2006 as opposed to 36 classes in 2005). Popular classes
included; Hip Hop, Ballet, Beginning Irish Dance, Kindermusik, Belly Dance, All 4 Dance, Beginning
Guitar for Teens/Adults, Art Experience for Kids, and Magical Dance Camp. Attachment 1 is a detailed

Returning Summer Classes
During the summer months, arts camps are a popular option for youth since youth are out of school and
parents are looking for more time extended activities or concentrated daily programs. This goal has been
achieved the past 2 years by offering popular classes which meet these criteria and have met or exceeded
enrollment limits. Repeat summer programs and camps in 2006 included the ever popular JazzMasters
program, All 4 Dance Camp, Imagine Performing Arts Camp and Shakespeare Theatre Camp. In all, 53
youth participated in these camps over the summer.
New Classes
Art Experience for Kids: Eleven students enrolled in this four-week session which allowed participants
to use their imagination while being exposed to the fundamentals of both drawing and painting. Students
used pencils, crayons, pastels and paint and also learned how to use a color chart and mix colors. The
program was offered to youth ages 5 to 12 years old.
Magical Dance Camp & Pop Stars Camp: Spotlight Arts Academy,a new business in Dublin, began
offering dance classes through the City in the spring. Successful dance classes have included Indian .
Classical Dance and All Boys Breakdance. This summer, two new dance camps were offered and both
surpassed the minimum enrollments. These one-week camps provided professional instruction in various
styles of dance including jazz, ballet, hip hop, and tap, as well as guidance in hair, makeup and clothing
for the performing artist. The camps served students from ages 3 to 13 years old.
