SUBJECT: Correspondence from Eddie Jo Mack regarding Black History
Month Celebration
Prepared by John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor
ATTACHMENTS: • Letter from Eddie Jo Mack
RECOMMENDATION: Receive presentation from Eddie Jo Mack and provide appropriate
direction to Staff
•
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: Correspondence has been received from Dublin resident Eddie Jo
Mack suggesting a new program for the City of Dublin, a Black History Month Celebration (Attachment
1). As described in the letter, a group of interested citizens would like the City to consider offering a
Black History Month Celebration in February 2009, as a way of providing a series of learn ing
opportunities to the community.
Staff recently met with several representatives of the group to discuss potential program elements. Ideas
shared included using a few different City facilities for activities and potential program ideas included;
workshops, a-concert, exhibit, film series, story telling and others. Staff indicated that it would be
important for the representatives to develop a committee to handle such things as fundraising, promotion
and marketing, and partnerships. Committee members could include members of the general public,
churches, local schools and leaders in the community.
Staff would like to point out that since this program is not currently included in the annual budget or work
program for the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division, it will need to be referred to the annual goals and
objectives study session for consideration for the next fiscal year. •
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the presentation regarding the Black History Month Celebration from Eddie Jo Mack If the -
Commission supports the program concept, Staff will include it on the list of potential objectives for
Fiscal Year 2008-2009,with further discussion taking place at the January 10, 2008 meeting.
