DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division coordinates and
implements a number of quality programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational and
artistic experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This goal is accomplished by providing diverse
cultural program offerings in the areas of music, dance, film and visual and performing arts. Following is
a summary of programs conducted during summer 2007.
CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES:
Cultural Arts Classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of activities such
as Theatre Camps, Dance Camps, Ballet, Piano, Guitar, Country Line Dance, Irish Dance, Drawing and
Painting, Children's Art and Music, and others. Cultural Arts Classes provide an opportunity for
participants to attempt new experiences, define current artistic skills, as well as providing a social setting
for meeting new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural
Arts Classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors. A majority of classes are taught in eight-week
sessions but some are more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops.
A total of 308 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during summer 2007, which was an
increase of 4% over summer 2006. This was consistent with the successful summer registration numbers
posted in 2005 and 2006, when a significant number of new classes were offered for the first time. The
cancellation rate was 4% higher than 2006, although the average registration per class increased over last
year from 8.25 to 8.56 participants per class. Popular classes included; Hip Hop, Ballet, Hula and
Tahitian Dance for Children, Beginning and Intermediate Irish Dance, Kindermusik, Belly Dance I and II,
All 4 Dance, Beginning Guitar for Youth, Art Experience for Kids, and Cartoon Workshop. Attachment
1 is a detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report for summer 2007, which includes a breakdown of
the classes offered as well as the registration for each class. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for
summer 2006 for comparison purposes.

New Classes
BandWorks: Eight students enrolled in this one-week camp which allowed participants to use their
musical skills to rehearse as a Rock &Roll group and practice a number of songs. Students played drums,
guitar, bass, and sang to some old favorites with a final performance for family and friends. The program
was offered to youth ages 10 to 12 years old.
Breaking into Film & Television: Six adult participants attended this one-day workshop which
reviewed the various aspects of the movie and television industry, types of jobs available in the field, and
how to get training and hands-on experience through various means.
Pop Stars Camp: This one-week dance camp provided professional instruction to 7 students in various
styles of dance including jazz, ballet, hip hop and tap. Students also received guidance in hair, makeup
and clothing for the performing arts. The camp served students from 7 to 13 years old.
Violin Lessons Made Easy: This is the first time the Violin class has received sufficient registration,
and although there were only 2 students enrolled, the hope is that this class will catch on in the future with
additional students. Participant's ages 5 to 12 years do receive individual instruction, based on their
abilities and experience.
