DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division develops and implements
quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide recreational
experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This is accomplished by providing diverse cultural
program offerings in areas such as music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Following is a summary of
programs conducted during winter 2007.
CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES:
Cultural Arts Classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of activities such
as Theatre Camps, Dance Camps, Ballet, Piano, Guitar, Country Line Dance, Irish Dance, Drawing and
Painting, Kindermusik, and others. Cultural Arts Classes provide an opportunity for participants to
attempt new experiences, refine current artistic skills, as well as providing a social setting for meeting
new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes
are taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are
more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops.
A total of 379 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during winter 2007, which was virtually
the same enrollment for winter 2006. The cancellation rate was 17% higher than 2006 although the
average registration per class increased significantly over last year by approximately 4 participants per
class. A number of classes that didn't reach minimum enrollments and were canceled were either new
classes or new one time workshops. Popular classes included; Art Experience for Kids, Beginning Irish
Dance, Kindermusik Village, Belly Dance, Beginning Guitar, Country Line Dance, Cheerleading, and
Snow White & Friends. Attachment 1 is a detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report for winter
2007, which includes a breakdown of classes offered as well as the registration for each class.
Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for winter 2006 for comparison purposes.

New Classes
• Snow White & Friends: Twenty two students enrolled in this nine-week program that prepared youth
ages 6 to 13 years old for a mini-production of Snow White, which was held on the weekend of March
23`' at the Dublin Senior Center. Students were taught how to sing, dance and act, as well as
understanding stage movement and ensemble performing.
Beginning Watercolor Painting: Five participants enrolled in this eight-week class for novice artists
who learn how to mix and blend watercolors and accomplish the basics of painting and drawing.
As noted previously, several other new classes were offered for the winter session but did not meet
minimum enrollments. These classes included trumpet lessons, violin lessons, balloon artistry, and several
workshops in arts & crafts. Several of these classes will again be offered in the spring session, in the
hopes that more interest will be shown from the community for these activities.

Upcoming Summer Camps & Classes
In an attempt to reach the parents and guardians of youth in our community prior to making their plans for
summer camps, the Parks & Community Services Department has developed an exclusive Summer Camp
Brochure which contains all the summer camps offered by the City. This brochure was made available at
the St. Patrick's Day Festival, and registration for all the camps begins April 16th, more than a month
sooner than the normal summer classes registration period which begins on May 20. The Dublin
Recreation Guide for summer classes will also be published and mailed to residents on May 7th: Cultural
& Heritage Camps included in the new brochure include returning programs; All 4 Dance Camp,
Intensive Summer Dance Program, Magical Dance Camp and Pop Stars Dance Camp, and new programs;
Museum Apprentice Teen Camp, Lullaby of Broadway Camp and Annie Jr. Performance Camp.
Additionally, a new workshop entitled "Breaking into Film & Television" will be offered by an
accomplished producer and director named Akhtar Sheikh, who has written and directed two features
produced by San Francisco Bay Area Production Companies. Staff will be exploring the possibility of
offering film production classes for teens in the next school year.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the report from Staff.
