8.1 Summer 2007 Quarterly Report
John Hartnett, Heritage & Cultural Arts Supervisor, advised that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division
coordinates and implements a number of quality programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational
and artistic experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This goal is accomplished by providing diverse cultural
program offerings in the areas of music, dance, film and visual and performing arts. Hartnett reviewed a summary
of programs conducted during summer 2007, including a comparison to summer 2006 classes, new classes and
camps for summer 2007 and upcoming fall classes.
Commission Comments
Cm. Acuff asked if any of the participants in Breaking into Film and Television was interested in pursuing this
medium further. Hartnett advised that it is difficult to offer these types of classes at this time because it requires
the use of technical equipment and Channel 30, which does have technical equipment, has very little available
studio time. Hartnett indicated that there are already technical film & TV classes being offered to high school
students in the area, through collaboration with teachers in Pleasanton and Dublin High School.
Chairperson Mack suggested we might consider partnering in some way with the Livermore Film Festival.
Hartnett advised he would look into the Livermore Film Festival.
8.2 Summer Concert Series
Hartnett advised the Commission that the City will be sponsoring Dublin's 12th Annual Summer Concert Series
beginning in July 2008. Five free concerts will be held on consecutive Friday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
outdoors at the Dublin Civic Center plaza area, and are free to the public. Traditionally, the concerts begin on the
first Friday following the July 4`h Holiday. However, since July 4th falls on a Friday in 2008, the concerts will be

scheduled to begin on the following Friday,July 11th, and continue through August 8`h. Hartnett reviewed the types
of music that has been played in the past, which included a list of bands over the past five years and attendance
figures for each.
Commission Comments
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold liked the Cajun/Zydeco sound because it was fun and engaging.
Cm. Carr suggested an Hawaiian night where we can have an instructor on hand to provide lessons to the public for
free.
Chairperson Mack liked the idea of bringing an instructor to the performance to help the audience become more
engaged in the concert, such as Country Line Dancing or the Tango.
Cm. Lussie asked if we would include a Big Band. Hartnett advised we could include a Big Band in the 2008
Summer Concert Series.
Acuff suggested Rock&Roll (60's through the 90's)is always a crowd pleaser as well.
Other Business
Brief INFORMATIONAL ONLY Reports from Heritage and Cultural Arts Commissioners and/or Staff
Cm. Carr advised that you can now view POD Casts of museums and exhibits.
Cm. Lussie is working on publishing a book.
Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold asked if Staff could consider making City of Dublin hand held flags as handouts at City
events. People love flags and want to show their pride for the City of Dublin and feel this is a great way to express
their kinship.
•
Hartnett advised that the Winter Concert Series will include the Dave Rocha Jazz Group in November and the Bay
Bells Concert in December. In January we will host a big band concert and in February, we will have a concert
