The May 14, 1998 meeting of the Youth Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:46 p.m. at the Civic Center,
Dublin California,by Chairperson Garren.

Roll Call
Committee members Present: Arcuri,Brown, Chapman, Cooper, Garren,Kaur,Ross, Seals,Thuman,
Gill, Sugiyama
Committee members Absent: Yniguez,Pedersen,Rubert
Commission Representative: Schmidt
Staff members Present: Wierschem,Ashby
Oral Communications-None
Approval of Minutes-
Committee member Chapman asked to make a change to include her as present in the Roll Call section
of the April 23, 1998 minutes and made a motion to approve the minutes of April 23, 1998 with that correction.
Committee member Gill seconded the motion.
Written Communications-None
Unfinished Business-
Youth Advisory Committee Logo
Staff asked that the Committee provide input to the contest,including how to market and judge the contest.
Committee member Chapman suggested mentioning the $50.00 gift certificate to the winner of the contest in the
announcements at school.
The committee asked if the art teachers were allowing students to draw in class for the contest. Staff member Ashby
responded that the teachers felt they could not allocate class time for logo drawing a this time.
Committee Member Chapman suggested if Tower wouldn't donate the gift certificate, purchase a certificate through
Dublin High school.
There was some discussion about not finding a logo that was representative of the Committee. Committee member
• Arcuri felt that an award should be given regardless of weather the Committee decides to use the logo on printed
materials or not.
Committee Member Cooper also suggested recognizing the 2nd and 3rd place winners with a ribbon or some type of
an award.
Staff recommended having the logos on display at the Civic Center for Committee Members to view and judge at
their convenience and announce the winner at the Dub Town Jam. The Committee concurred.
Spring Teen Concert In The Park
Staff reported that the sub-committee plans for event included naming it the"Dub Town Jam" and having the
Commission serve Hot Dogs. Promotions included changing screen'savers at school, handing flyers out at
the rally and placing flyers at various teen frequented businesses.
Teen Summer Activities and Programs
Staff reviewed summer programming plans which included having pool parties called Dive-Ins, one dance
in July at Shannon Center and open gym nights. Plans are getting underway to market the activities to teens
in Dublin. Staff asked for the Committee's input on promoting events.
Commissioner Schmidt recommended getting flyers out to Golden Skate as they have teen night every Saturday night
and draw a big crowd.
Advisor Seals indicated that Friday Night Live would be at Shabooms again Sunday nights and that would be another
venue to market programs during the summer. Additionally, Karen recommended having cards for teens to fill out a
the Dub Town Jam requesting their name and address in order to get their give away.
Committee Member Cooper- Expressed a concern that the girls and boys teams are holding open gyms during week
at that would effect attendance at the Late Night Open Gym.
Meeting Date for Youth Advisory Committee
Staff summarize the Youth Advisory Committee's bylaws stating that the Youth Advisory Committee shall
hold meetings at least once a month at a designated time and place that shall be fixed and determined b°y the
Advisory Committee and entered upon its minutes." According to schedules submitted at the last meeting
Thursday was the only day with no conflicts. Staff asked the Committee to set a regular meeting day of the
month.
Committee Member Gill Motioned that the Youth Advisory Committee meet the 1st Thursday of each month.
Committee Member Chapman seconded the motion

New Business
Recruitment and Selection of Next Y.A.C.
Staff summarized plans for recruitment and selection of the next Youth Advisory Committee. Application deadline is
June 19th. A sub-committee of Parks and Community Services Commissioners will conduct an oral interview and
appointments will be recommended to the City Council by the Mayor and appointment confirmed by the City
Council. Staff strongly encouraged Committee Members to re-submit their application as soon s possible. The
Committee was asked to review the application recruitment schedule and selection procedures.
Committee Member Ross suggested having the interviews more toward the end of June as to avoid conflicts with
vacations.
Committee Member Cooper concurred with Committee Member Ross stating that she would be out of town during
the interviews as scheduled.
Staff member .Wierschem indicated that the interview schedule was tentative and would be fmalized by the _
Commission sub-committee.
Committee Member Garren motioned to have a graduating Committee Member be a part of the sub-committee that
makes recommendations to the Commission for selection of the next Youth Advisory Committee.
Committee Member Chapman seconded the motion

Staff member Wierschem expressed that she would let the Commission know of the Committees vote on this matter.
Other Business
Brief INFORMATIONAL ONLY Reports from the Youth Advisory Committee and/or Staff
The floor was open to discussion at this point and Committee members were allowed to speak about items not on the
agenda that they wanted to share or bring to the attention of the Committee.
Winston-Brought forth the idea of having a retreat to evaluate the year and recognize outgoing members
Sugiyama- Suggested using this retreat to generate a report to the City Council on the year's activities and results
Gill-Asked to have this item placed on the next agenda for consideration and action by the Committee.
Wierschem-Reported that the Valley Community Gymnasium is scheduled for completion in October of 1998

Being no further business,the meeting was adjourned at 9:02 p.m.
