Recommendations RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report and Identify Goals and Objectives for 1998/99 FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Youth Advisory Committee purpose is to better the living environment for youth in the City of Dublin through participation in the decision making and program planning process. To set-up the framework to accomplish this, General Responsibilities were given to Committee Members. They are as follows: 1. Provide input on youth services and programming to the Parks and Community Services Commission, City Council and to City Staff. 2. Address issues that affect youth in the community. 3. Assist with the promotion and implementation of youth activities. 4. Generate an annual report status of youth in the community. Additionally, Committee members are expected to attend all regular meetings and sub-committee meetings as assigned; attend two-thirds of the activities planned and sponsored by the Advisory Committee; and promote youth activities and provide support for successful implementation of youth activities and programs. In accomplishing the Committee's responsibilities as outlined in the bylaws staff recommends that the following objectives be adopted for 1998/99. 1. Provide input on youth services and programming to the Parks and Community Services Commission, City Council and to City Staff. Provide input on final design for phase I of Emerald Glen Community Park's amenities such as the skateboard parr basketball and tennis courts • Review the evaluation of after school programming for middle school teens and provide input on how to meet the needs as identified by the report. • Review the 1998 Y.A.C. Recommendations and select activities and programs to be implemented by Y.A.C.for 1998/99. COPIES TO: ITEM NO. 7.2 G:Teens\YAClstatement\101 golob 2. Address issues that affect youth in the community. • Since 1995 an assessment of the issues that effect teens has not been done. Y.A.C. should develop a method for determining the needs of teens and assessing what programs and activities teens want. 3. Assist with the promotion and implementation of youth activities. • Develop standing sub-committee comprised of Y..A..0 members and non-members to increase the support for youth driven activity planning and promotion. • Each Y.A.C. member will be responsible for working with the standing sub-committee to plan and implement at least one event or program. 4. Generate an annual report status of youth in the community. • Investigate the feasibility of developing a Youth Excellence Award night that reviews and honors outstanding programs, services, youth, businesses and community members for their contributions and accomplishments to youth in the community. Recommendation Staff recommends that the Committee review, discuss and adopt the Goals and Objectives listed above. 1998 Y.A.C. Recommendations • Offer more successful events • Start small and build on success • Grow a Sub-committee to help with planning and implementing events • Each Y.A.C. member head up a sub-committee • Have a Youth Awards Night • Implement Random Acts of Kindness • Conduct another Dub Town Jam • Sell T-shirts at the St. Patrick's Day Celebration • Have more a few more team building events for Y.A.C. • Make Y.A.C. members more accountable for their responsibilities • Evaluate middle school teen programs • Have Y.A.C. events listed in Dublin High's School newspaper • Get Y.A.C. events on school calendars • Survey teens about what they want to see happen in Dublin for teens.
