Registration Analysis B. Registration Comparison C. Monthly Attendance - Senior Center RECOMMENDATION Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT None DESCRIPTION The following report summarizes the programs and activities sponsored by the City's Recreation Department during the Spring Quarter, April, May and June, 1989. Afterschool Playground Program See attached "1988-89 Afterschool Playground End -of -Year Report", Agenda Statement No. 6.3 Leisure Enrichment Classes The Spring quarter classes didn't appear to be affected by all the confusion stemming from the Shannon Center renovation. Although all the classes and programs had to be relocated to other facilities throughout the City, our programs were generally well received. The success rate for all of our classes was higher than both the Winter 1989 and Spring 1988 quarters. Eighty-six percent of the children's classes were conducted as were 78% of the teen/adult classes. The overall success rate for the Spring quarter was 80%. Children's classes continue to be tremendously popular. "Bumper Bowl", "Sing -Along Time" and Time for Two's" all filled quickly. "Friday Fun Night" was a popular program for school aged children which featured special themes, games and activities. In the teen/adult classes, we had strong support for "Basic Financial Planning", "Tot Saver CPR" and "Calligraphy". "Country Western Dance" and "Golf" continue to be extremely popular. The "Creative Stitchery" classes were also very successful. Preschool Program All three Preschool classes were filled to capacity during Session III (April -June). The children were able to attend a very special field trip in April when they went to the sensory garden at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek. This was a unique experience for both the children and their parents. Each class also had a family "end of the year" picnic at Kolb Park which was fun in spite of the heat! The session ended with the traditional "graduation" party where the children shared some of the skills and experiences they acquired during the past year. Senior Center Program In cooperation with Amador Valley Adult Education, the Dublin Senior Center conducted an eight (8) week Microwave Cooking Class in April and May. The class was well received and will be offered in the Fall focusing on meals for one or two persons. In April, the Valley Community Health Center performed one of the quarterly health screenings. The Life History Writing Class conducted by Chabot College Quest program continued through the Spring quarter ending in June. Average daily attendance for April was 59. ITEM NO. Copies to: AGENDA STATEMENT - Spring 1989 Recreation Report Page Two The highlight of May was a boat trip on the San Joaquin Delta attended by a busload of Seniors. AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) conducted a Mature Driver/55 Alive driver education class. Plans are to repeat this popular class in the Fall or Winter. Evening programming expanded to two (2) nights per month with Old Fashioned Dance classes. Average daily attendance for May was 70. The first Senior Resource Faire was conducted at the Dublin Senior Center on Saturday, June 3, 1989. It was attended by 200 seniors and 30 exhibitors. The Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee recommended making this an annual event. The June 20 bus trip to Korbel Winery was very successful. We've found that short one -day trips appear to be the best attended. The Shannon Senior Dance group continued to meet at the Senior Center through the Spring quarter. Average daily attendance for June was 56. Special Events The Fourth Annual City -Wide Flea Market was held on Saturday, June 10 from 8:00am-2:00pm at Shannon Park. There were 58 vendor spaces sold utilizing 42 parking lot spaces and 16 lawn spaces, with well over 200 in attendance. The Flea Market validated the old statement "one mans junk is another mans treasure", as almost all vendors reported brisk sales and shoppers were seen leaving with a variety of miscellaneous items! In addition, staff operated a coffee and doughnut booth that was very well received by vendors and shoppers alike. Teen Program See attached "Teen Lunchtime Activity Program End -of -Year Report" Agenda Statement No.6.4. It is staffs recommendation that the Commission review the Spring 1989 Recreation Report and provide staff with any comments or suggestions on programming.
