Registration Analysis B. Registration Comparison C. Monthly Attendance - Senior Center RECOMMENDATION Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT : None DESCRIPTION The following report summarizes the programs and activities sponsored by the City's Recreation Department during the Winter Quarter, January through March, 1989. Afterschool Playground Program Attendance at the two Afterschool Playground continues to grow. Nielsen has an average daily attendance of "55" participants, and Murray averages "28" children per day. Each site offered unique special events for their program participants Murray participants produced a bi-monthly newsletter, complete with Fads-N-Fashion columns, comics and current event listings. Program participants served as editors, cartoonists and writers for the "No Name Newsletter". The Nielsen site opened a "restaurant" called "The Kids Cafe". Program participants developed the menu, decorations and money, and served as waiters, bus persons, host/hostesses and patrons. A surprise restaurant critic rated it a four star. In addition to these events, approximately "25" participants from both playground sites marched in the Annual St. Patricks Day Parade. Afterwards, the Recreation Leaders operated a cotton candy and shamrock toss booths at the community celebration. The money raised will be spent on an end -of -year party for both playground sites. Leisure Enrichment Classes Winter quarter class participation was up slightly from the same quarter one year ago. Four hundred -eighty (480) people participated in the "38" classes offered by the department. Eight -three percent of the children's classes were conducted. Only 60% of the teen and adult were held, however this is still an improvement over last year. Overall, 69% of our classes were conducted. In the children's classes, we opened a fourth session of "Time for Two's" in an attempt to accommodate the number of people interested in participating. "Bumper Bowl", "Sing -Along Time" and "Tap & Ballet" continue to be popular. In the teen and adult classes, the ski trips were a big hit. We had one ski trip for middle school students and also an overnight ski trip for high school students. Both were very successful. The "Calligraphy" and "Country Western Dance" classes continue to be popular. The "Creative Stitchery" classes also received a great deal of interest. There were "17" children enrolled (maximum 20) in Session II. The morning classes were both full to capacity with "20" children each. Two field trips were conducted during the Winter quarter. The first trip was to the Animal Ark Pet Store where the children were able to see a shark being fed. The second trip was to the library to listen to stories and check out books. Additionally the children walked to the mailbox to mail valentines and had a visit from a Police Officer to discuss safety. Senior Center Proqram The Dublin Senior Center celebrated the New Year and it's six month anniversary by adding three new classes to the regular programming. A three week course on "Dealing With Hearing Loss" was conducted by Audiologist Kenneth Billheimer. A Knit, Crochet and Needlepoint class from Amador Valley Adult Education began on January 12, 1989, and programming was extended into the evening one Friday night per month with an Old -Fashioned Ballroom Dance class. Established classes and programs were continued and a drop -in bridge program was added on Friday afternoons. As part of our arrangement with the Valley Community Health Center, a health screening was conducted in January. The Health Center performs health screenings for our Center on a quarterly basis. Average daily attendance for January 1989 was "46". In February the Center began publishing a monthly newsletter for which a mailing list is being generated. In cooperation with American Red Cross, a monthly blood pressure screening was established with Red Cross providing the volunteers for this valuable service. The Dublin Library and Senior Center established a joint program: Senior Reading Group. The group opted to meet at the library for monthly book discussions. In an attempt to increase volunteer participation, contact was made with the Valley Volunteer Bureau. This contact and resulting publicity has generated two new Center volunteers. Average daily attendance for February 1989 was "43". A seminar on the Medicare Catastrophic Act was presented by representatives of Waddell & Reed (financial planners) in March. Thirty-five (35) persons attended. March brought other changes to the Senior Center. Because of the renovation of Shannon Community Center the Shannon Senior Dance Group and the Dublin - San Ramon Seniors began meeting at the Senior Center. The dancers continue meeting here with a number of their members joining in the Center's lunch program. The Dublin -San Ramon Seniors met at the Center for three weeks before moving to the Sunny Glen Clubhouse. Average daily attendance for March 1989 was "47". Special Events Due to the renovation of Shannon Center the Annual St. Patricks Day Celebration was held on March 18 at Dublin High School. There were food, game and information booths as well as a wide variety of entertainment. The celebration took place immediately following the parade through downtown Dublin. The event was well attended in spite of foul weather. The Recreation Department expanded the Easter activities to include a "Breakfast With the Easter Bunny" in addition to the traditional hunt. A breakfast was held at the Senior Center on March 25 with a hunt following at Kolb Park. Due to the heavy rains the night before the event the hunts were revised so that each child simply received a lunch -size bag full of Easter goodies. The events went as well as could be expected under the circumstances. The children and their parents were generally pleased. Agenda Statement - Winter 1989 Recreation Report May 9, 1989 Page Three Teen Program The Lunch Time Activities Program was introduced at Wells Middle School in February, and has received a tremendous response from students and faculty alike. The kick-off activity, The Junk Food Relay attracted "34" participants and over "175" spectators per lunch period. Activities are conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and are planned one month in advance. Several major excursions were taken during the Winter quarter. Thirteen (13) middle school students attended a one -day ski trip to Boreal in January and "11" high school students attended an overnight ski trip to Sugar Bowl and Boreal in February. In addition, eight middle school students participated in a "Marathon" excursion to Disneyland. The bus left at 2:00a.m. on Tuesday, March 28 and returned at 2:00a.m. on Wednesday!
