The parade, sponsored by the Dublin -San Ramon Lions Club, typically utilizes a route through the downtown area of Dublin. The community celebration, coordinated by the City's Recreation Department, features food, game and information booths operated by local service clubs and non-profit organizations, as well as a variety of entertainment. Through the years, the parade route and location of the celebration has changed, but the scope of the event has remained fairly constant. The Dublin Chamber of Commerce, in an effort to promote the businesses in Dublin, has proposed that the City and the Chamber work cooperatively to expand the scope of the St. Patrick's Day Celebration to include the business community. The proposed expansion would entail relocating the community celebration to the downtown area, utilizing the Dublin Place Shopping Center, and inviting the businesses to participate by operating booths and allowing "sidewalk sales". Businesses would be encouraged to offer "St. Patrick's Day" promotions and participate in special advertising supplements. Additionally, it has been suggested that a professional arts and crafts show and sale be included in the event. The City Council will be considering the proposal from the Chamber of Commerce to expand the scope of the St. Patrick's Day Celebration at their meeting of December 10, 1990. Staff will report on the Council's action at the Commission meeting. Staff has met with representatives from the Dublin San Ramon Lions Club who, once again, plan to sponsor the traditional St. Patrick's Day parade. The proposed route follows the same path as the previous two years: West on Amador Valley Boulevard; South on Regional Street; East on Dublin Boulevard; North on Village Parkway; West on Amador Valley Boulevard. Amador Plaza Road will be used as the staging area. In addition to the parade and community celebration, the Dublin Sister City Association plans to host a corned beef dinner and dance at the Shannon Community Center. Mailings to local community organizations will be done once a location for the community celebration is determined. Staff is also making contacts with entertainers. Publicity for this event will be included in the Winter and Spring Schedules of Recreation Programs, the 1991 City Calendar, the Chamber of Commerce Newsletter and local newspapers. Additionally Staff will be preparing a flyer for distribution through the schools and a poster for local businesses. The Staff welcomes any input from the Commission on ways to make the 1991 celebration unique and memorable for the community. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ITEM NO. y • -a Copies to:
