DESCRIPTION Last Summer, the Recreation Department initiated a
Summer Teen Program for Middle School teens consisting of excursions,
on -site special events and pool parties. The program was moderately
successful, with the greatest response and turnout at the pool bashes.
Staff proposes to expand on this program this Summer by continuing to offer
excursions, special events and pool parties, but to offer a Teen Drop -In
Center as well. The Teen Drop -In Center would operate from 3-5p.m.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 6:30-9:30p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Pool parties would be held on Friday evenings 6-9pm. In addition, Tuesday
and Thursday afternoons would be excursion and special event days, and the
Center would not be open in the afternoon on these days. The program
activities and Center would be open to both Middle and High School students.
To date, staff has reviewed the Teen Program budget and feel that there are
sufficient funds available to operate this program. Staff has also found a
site that would be appropriate for this program, the faculty lounge at
Dublin High School. This is an excellent site in that it is a nice facility
with access to the cafeteria for dances and special events. It is located
adjacent to the Swim Center and would allow for supervision of the Teens as
they go from the pool to the Center. There is a nice flat area outside of
the room that would be utilized for barbecues and so on.
The program would be supervised by a 30-hour per week program coodinator,
and staffed by three additional Recreation Leaders. Staff is pursuing the
possibility of installing video games, a pool table and other games so the
teens will have something to do while at the Center. In addition, the
Summer Youth Employment Program will be housed at the Center.
At this time, staff requests input from the Commission in order to proceed
with the planning for this program.
