7.2 -2004 SUMMER QUARTERLY REPORT
Staff gave an overview of the 2004 Summer Quarterly Report. In comparing the attendance from past
summer statistical information, staff explained that the slight drop in attendance was due to the fact that
some classes that traditionally met during the summer did not meet. For example, the quilting group that
usually meets year around took a summer break this year. Poker which met twice a week now only meets
once a week. The attendance of the Trail Trekkers was cut in half during the summer. Some of the
regular walkers continued to walk under the leadership of Beth Kobold while Rich took a three-month
summer break. It was determined that the slight drop in Trekkers attendance was also due to the
increased difficulty level of the walks planned as well as the fact that many of the students also took
summer vacations.
Commissioner Burr Cain inquired about the Computer classes, and the attendance. Staff explained that
the computer class offerings are a one-on-one format and that the Center utilizes volunteer instructors to
teach the classes. Although the computers are accessible for use and a sign up sheet is available near the
computer, it is difficult to monitor how many seniors actually use the computers. Greer asked if there was
a way where seniors could log in before using the computer. One of the problems of logging in is that if a
senior is computer literate, they usually owe a computer and wouldn't need to use the Senior Center
computers. The other half of the senior population may not know enough about computers to be able to
access the computers, and that includes knowing how to turn the computer on. Currently the computers
are made available by simply turning on the monitor allowing seniors to freely use the computer. Another
problem that Staff recognizes is that there have been several inquiries by seniors who own MAC
•
•
computer systems who can not be trained on the Center's computers since the MAC system is not
compatible with the IBM PC. Staff will continue to research creative ways to develop, and attract less •
computer-literate seniors to take advantage of the computers. Currently classes are offered on Monday
mornings. Seniors may pre-register for instruction by Friday whereby the instructor is notified to instruct
students on the following Monday morning. If there is no one registered for the instructional class, the
volunteer instructor simply does not come in.
Commissioner Burr Cain asked what does RECAP stand for. HICAP stands for Health Insurance
Counseling and Advocacy Program. This is another free service offered to seniors who need counseling
on health insurance problems and providers including Medicare questions.
