WRITTEN ON A MOTION MADE BY CM. GREER PAYTON, SECONDED BY CM. BARBARA

7.1 Step Out for Senior Centers Event
Cm. Mary Lou Bielke and Elsie Jennings made a brief presentation at the April 6 City Council meeting.
A copy of the Step Out Event flyer was given to each Committee Member. Cm. Greer Payton suggested
that the word Senior Housing be typed in the flyer next to Eden Housing, Inc. Project Update.
Staff discussed the schedule of each Step Out Event - the Walk, the Pancake Breakfast, Art Show and the
Senior Information and Faire.
The 1.5 mile walk will begin at the Dublin Library and end at the Senior Center. The Police Department
will provide assistance in making sure the walkers safely cross the major intersections. Signs will be
posted along the street route instead of balloons to mark the walk route.
The Senior Center Van and the Police Crime Prevention Van will be used to transport walkers back to the
Dublin Library from the Senior Center. Carpooling is encouraged amongst walkers.
The Dublin Historical Preservation Association and the Dublin Sister City Association are scheduled to
prepare the Pancake Breakfast consisting of breakfast sausage, pancakes and juice. Staff reported that the
Dublin Senior Center Foundation donated $300 toward the cost of the event. Cm Payton reported that
the Safeway Grocery Store on Dublin Blvd. has agreed to donate breakfast supplies. Cm. Payton also
presented Staff with a $100 Safeway Gift Certificate from the Tri-Valley Women's Business Network. A
letter of thanks will be sent to each organization that donates money or gives in-kind donation for the Step
Out event.
Staff gave an overview of all the agencies that will be participating in the Info Faire. Cm. Payton asked if
someone would be available to present the Trips and Tours Information and activities of the Dublin
Senior Center. Staff announced that Jay Fehan from Colette Vacations will talk about upcoming extended
travel and the Senior Center will also have an information table.
Over 15 senior artists from the Senior Center and community are registered to display their artwork at the
Art Show.
Staff confirmed the participation of each Committee Member to assist Staff during the event. The
Committee Members agreed to the following:
• Cm. Payton volunteered to coordinate the volunteers for the pancake breakfast.
• Cm. Bielke volunteered to coordinate the registration of the walkers.
• Cm. Gifford volunteered to help staff during the Art Show.
• Cm. Jennings volunteered to help with registration and the walk.
• Cm. Silvas volunteered to be the historian and photograph the event.
In addition, Cm. Bielke, Jennings and Silvas confirmed that they would participate in the walk.
Staff reported sending publicity to the Pennysaver, local newspapers, cable TV, and appeared on CTV's
"Everything Local". Staff also sent information to City employees via e-mail. Cm. Payton suggested
using the Chamber of Commerce website to announce the Info Faire.
Cm. Silvas inquired about the possibility of receiving donations from local retail stores, such as Mervyns
and Target Stores. Cm. Elsie Jennings asked how to go about receiving donations and gift certificates
from restaurants and retail stores. Cm. Jennings shared that she knew several local business owners who
may possibly give a donation. Staff stated that a letter addressed to the store manager is written
requesting items to be donated. Cm. Mary Lou Bielke reported that in the past Longs Drug Store had
been a generous donor.
Cm. Bielke asked when the Library would be open on Saturday. Staff would obtain keys to open the
library by 8:00 a.m. Staff asked that volunteers report at the Library at 8:00 a.m. before the first walkers
arrive to check-in. Cm. Bielke asked if there would be adequate amount of signs to carry. Staff reported
that ten additional signs plus the 30 signs used last year would be available for walkers to carry.
Cm. Payton inquired about the status of the Free Throw Contest. Commissioner Cain reported that this
Intergenerational venue had been deferred until the Day at the Glen event in September. Staff felt that
this would be an exciting opportunity to showcase the skills of seniors and promote senior fitness and
sports.
Cm. Silvas inquired about the upcoming Garage Sale scheduled for Saturday, June 5 and suggested that
items stored under the stage be considered for sale.
Cm. Bielke inquired if there has been any thought given in selling bricks or concrete blocks at the new
Senior Center,as a fundraiser. She suggested that the funds be used to upgrade areas in the new Senior
Center. It was suggested that the Foundation be approached with this possible Fundraising opportunity.
Cm. Silvas suggested that these plaques would be more effective if they were placed at eye level instead
of the ground. CM Payton suggested using brick along the patio wall or pathway. Cm. Silvas
recommended that the past DSCAC minutes be checked in reference to discussion made in the past.
Adjournment
Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:35 a.m.
