This year's theme will be titled: "Living Well, Aging Well" and consist of the traditional walk and pancake breakfast. A second site at the Dublin Library will be added this year and consist of an Art Show and an Information and Resources Faire from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Art Show application forms have been distributed and are being accepted from senior artists from the Senior Center and community. The Dublin Library has been selected as the second site for an outreach program to bring the Senior Center services, activities and information to the community. An Information and Resources Faire has been added to conduct art demonstrations as well as mini-workshops. Agencies, such as Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) and Health, Insurance, Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), are scheduled to conduct short workshops for the community. HICAP will offer a workshop on the "Updates on Medicare" and LAS will speak on "Create a Secure Future Now: Planning in case You're Unable to Handle Your Own Affairs." Commissioner Cain suggested adding a Basketball Free-Throw Contest this year. It is relatively simple to conduct because it does not rely on a lot of equipment, and it could be used as an intergenerational program. Commissioner Cain stated that Councilmember Tim Sbranti, who is also a teacher and basketball coach at Dublin High School, has been identified as a possible volunteer to coordinate this component. Staff discussed the T-shirt using the Older Americans Month theme, "Living Well, Aging Well," and possible "Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Keep Active". Cm. Payton suggested identifying a sports store to sponsor the T-shirts. Staff suggested that if a sponsorship could not be secured that the T-shirt can be sold this year at cost in order to offset the cost of the shirt. Staff will ask the Dublin Senior Center Foundation to co-sponsor this event. Since staff would not be able to attend the April Foundation meeting, Staff asked that a member of the Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee attend the meeting on Wednesday, April 5 at 10:00 a.m. to request the donation. Staff announced that Cm. Payton had secured the volunteers for this event as she had done last year. She secured the Mayor to lead the walk. The Dublin Historical Preservation Association and Dublin Sister City Association will once again help with the preparation and serving of the pancake breakfast. Last year, the Alameda Fire Department and Dublin High School volunteers also helped during the event. Staff projects there will be an increase in attendance this year due to the more visible venue at the Library. Last year over 75 seniors and families and friends plus volunteers participated in the walk and breakfast. Pre-registration is preferred but walk-in registration will be accepted on the day of the event. Cm. Payton suggested that tickets be given to each walker to redeem for a free pancake breakfast. The cost of the breakfast for non-participants will be $3.00. The Committee Members then discussed how they could each assist Staff with the event. The Committee Members agreed to the following: • Cm. Payton volunteered to coordinate the volunteers for the pancake breakfast. • Cm. Bielke volunteered to coordinate the registration of the walkers. • Cm. Gifford volunteered to help staff during the Art Show. • Cm. Jennings volunteered to fill in where there is a need. • Cm. Silvas volunteered to be the historian and photograph the event. • Commissioner Cain volunteered to help with the Free Throw Contest. Publicity will include utilizing the local newspapers, the City's website and activity guide, cable TV and the Penny Saver. Staff will be appearing on the CTV show "Everything Local". Staff will also send information to City employees via e-mail. Staff recently utilized the city e-mail system to gather information regarding what types of information City employees may be interested in receiving regarding senior services or services for their aging parents. Staff plans to send flyers and information regarding the Step Out for Senior Centers Event and the Information and Resources Faire to city employees in Dublin and other neighboring cities. Adjournment Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:35 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Anna Hudson Recreation Coordinator
