DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
AGENDA STATEMENT
MEETING DATE:September 2, 2004
SUBJECT: Annual Trips and Tours Report
ATTACHMENT: 2003-2004 Travel Statistics Report
RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and provide input of future trip offerings
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: Attached is a summary of the trips offered at the Dublin Senior
Center during the past year (August 2003 to June 2004). There were over 549 trip sign-ups taken during
the past year. Of the 549 total sign-ups received, 390 sign-ups were taken for the 15-passenger van trips.
The remaining 159 sign-ups were for trips planned on BART, a motorcoach, or extended travel. The
Trips and Tours Program budget was increased to offer an average of three trips a month as compared to
two trips a month in the previous fiscal year. The new City-owned van arrived and ventured on its first
trip on September 24, 2003. Prior to this trip, a 15-passenger was rented through Enterprise.
Van Trips
The Trip and Tours offered in 2003-2004 continued to be a huge success. Staff attributed the success of
the trips to the diversity of trips planned that were affordable yet interesting to attract patrons. Another
reason is that patrons expressed that the fees are reasonably priced. Meals are not usually included in the
trip fee. The fees are slightly higher if admission or a meal is included. The$17 to $19,trip fee covers the
cost of the driver, gas, and vehicle maintenance. Many of the trips were filled to capacity. A total of 119
names were recorded on the waiting lists for various trips. The records depicted as many as 16 names on
one waiting list. As a result, second trips were offered to popular locations including a trip to the Lodi
River Tour/Wine and Roses Restaurant, and the Fallon Theatre in Columbia Park.
Some trips were cancelled including a shopping trip to Berkeley and the Gilroy Outlets, a Hula Show in
Walnut Creek, and the Oakland and San Francisco Garden Shows. Staff has determined that while
seniors don't mind paying and traveling up to two hours, local trips that are within a 15 to 40 miles radius
are not popular choices.
Motorcoach Overnight Trips by Frontier Tours/American Stage Tours
Overnight casino trips no longer attract seniors. With the exception of the Laughlin Trip, the overnight
trips to Reno and Chukchansi Indian Casino in Yosemite were cancelled. There has been an increased
trend and demand for day trips to Indian Casinos. Although the trips to Reno and Tahoe offered by the
Dublin Senior Foundation used to be popular, the Indian Casinos are more affordably priced and attract
seniors. Since October 2003,the Foundation has scheduled these day-long trips every other month.

Extended Travel
In December 2003 Collette Vacations, a professional agency specializing in travel for seniors, was
introduced. The first trip booked was to the Tournament of Roses Parade and Crystal Cathedral, which
had four sign-ups. These tour agencies can accept as little as one registration to successfully offer trips by
combining registrants from other senior centers. The City makes a commission for each senior who
registers through the Dublin Senior Center. Since January 2004 registration has averaged about two sign-
ups for each extended travel trip offered.
Recommendation
Staff recommends the Advisory Committee receive the report and provide input on future trip offerings.
