HomeMy WebLinkAbout7.2 2004 Fall Quarterly Report CITY OF DUBLIN DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE AGENDA STATEMENT MEETING DATE:March 4, 2004 SUBJECT: 2004 Fall Quarterly Report ATTACHMENT: Attendance Report RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Dublin Senior Center continues to strive to provide diverse activities that strengthen participants' cognitive, physical and emotional abilities. The Dublin Senior Center offers a variety of classes, activities, and programs that engage the mind, body, and spirit of participants. The active aging and fitness programs, such as Fitness over Fifty, the Trail Trekkers Walking Group, and Line Dance Classes help to promote and encourage physical wellness, core strength and balance. Traditional recreation offerings such as cards and bingo not only entertain but also engage the mind, foster mental dexterity, and encourage social interaction. The watercolor, art appreciation and craft classes as well as the reading and writing courses instill in the participants a sense of pride and accomplishment while providing the opportunity for a creative form of expression and self-discovery, be it in a finished painting, a drawing or an essay. The Trips and Tours Program and extended travel programs, result in multiple benefits for participants. Travel opens up a whole new world of discovery, experience and lifelong learning Exploring exotic cultures, consuming novel foods, and meeting new people engage all of one's abilities and senses. Recurring events, like the daily lunch program, weekly food distribution, and monthly special luncheons are reassuring and dependable. These activities reinforce community relations and maintain nutritional balance. Following is a summary of attendance at the Senior Center during the fall. Staff attributes the growth in attendance to the home-cooked meals that are reasonably priced. In September, participants ventured to the Copia Wine Center in Napa, the new River Rock Casino in Geyersville and the rolling hillside of Apple Hill. In October, seniors enjoyed a trip to the Fallon Theatre in Columbia and seaside views of Carmel. Twenty seniors enjoyed a 5-day motor coach trip to Laughlin. The Trail Trekkers took their first van trip aboard the new van to Point Reyes while another group of seniors enjoyed a day at the races at Golden Gate Fields. Over forty seniors enjoyed a day at the Palace of the Legion of Honor with the low cost transportation provided by the Dreyer's Bus/Black Tie Limousine Van Service. The Special Luncheons have also seen a steady increase in attendance. Although the September Luncheon drew only crowd of 48 seniors, both the Octoberfest and Thanksgiving luncheon drew crowds of 78 & 88 seniors, respectively. Starting in November 2003, the.Dublin Rotary Club made a commitment to be available to serve the seniors at the luncheons. Traditional polka tunes were played by local musician, Ken Logsdon and Jack Schmidt. The Wells Middle School Jazz Band delighted the seniors with their cool jazz sounds in November.
