In April, three day trips were offered. The first trip was to the musical performance of"Menopause" and
lunch at Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. The Trail Trekkers visited Point Reyes National Park. The
third trip was to a musical production called "Back to Bacharach" at the famous Fallon Theatre located in
Columbia State Park. The April Luncheon crowd enjoyed the sounds of BE Bozak and his Dixieland Jazz
Band. Twenty lucky seniors were treated to an A's Game by 20 Fallon Middle School Leadership
students. As a service project, the Leadership group selected to treat seniors to a professional baseball
game. The students raised enough money to pay for each person's round trip BART fare, admission to the
game and lunch. This is a fantastic intergenerational program in its second year and was developed by
Dublin Unified School District teacher Nancy Karell. Last year the first trip offered was offered by the
Wells Middle School Leadership class. Finally, Collette Vacations Extended Travel offered a Spirit of
Washington, D.C. trip and two people went from the Senior Center.
In May, the van trips included an outing to Korbel Champagne Cellars and Occidental for lunch, and a
trip to Bay Meadows in San Mateo for a Day at the Races. The May Luncheon entertainment was
provided by vocalist, Shirley Dougarian. The seniors enjoyed participating in an English Tea at the April
Crossing Cultures Program. The May Dinner Dance attracted a crowd of 56 seniors who enjoyed the
sounds of Manny Gutierrez and his Quartet Band. The Dublin Senior Center celebrated Older Americans
Month with its 5th Annual "Step Out for Senior Centers" event. This year's theme was "A Celebration of
Age: Connecting with Your Inner Spirit." A fun-filled day started with a walk at 9:00 a.m. Seventy-five
walkers were led by Mayor Lockhart and the Dublin Police Department, which provided assistance during
the walk. A pancake breakfast was prepared and served by the Dublin Historical Preservation Association
to over 100 seniors and friends. The Opening Ceremonies featured over twenty vendors who provided
information about a variety of senior services. The educational workshops also attracted seniors to this
event. The keynote speaker, Marita Grudzen, of Stanford Geriatric Education and the School of Medicine,
provided a special workshop entitled: "Connecting with Your Inner Spirit" from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
From 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., four mini-workshop demonstrations were held. They were Pilates by Valentin,
Laughter Yoga by Lydia Gonzales, Chi gong by the Be Well Institute, and Yoga and Mediation by
Kathryn Chess.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Advisory Committee receive the report.
