DESCRIPTION: The Dublin Senior Center will sponsor the 5th Annual "Step Out for
Senior Centers" event on Saturday, May 20, 2006. The event will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
The proposed theme for the 2006 event is, "Connecting with our Inner Spirit". Last year's theme was
entitled, "Connecting the Mind, Body and Spirit". Staff would like feedback from the Committee on the
proposed event theme.
Event Goals
The purpose of the event is to:
- Promote the activities and programs of the Dublin Senior Center.
- Promote a healthy lifestyles and lifelong learning.
- Educate the public about services available to seniors and their families.
In order to accomplish this, Staff recommends using a similar format and schedule as in the past. This
includes appointing two Advisory Committee Members to serve on a subcommittee to assist Staff with
planning and promoting the event. The subcommittee will meet with Staff to prepare a detailed program
plan, which will be presented at a future Advisory Committee meeting.
Background
The "Step Out" Event was originally created to celebrate Senior Center Awareness Week and Older
Americans Month and was co-sponsored by the California Park and Recreation Society. Held on the third
Saturday of May, this event traditionally began with a one-mile walk led by the Mayor and City Council.
Following the walk, there has been a free breakfast, an art exhibition featuring Senior Center artists, and a
resource fair. Additionally, senior service providers serving Dublin were invited to attend the event.

Last year the event date was postponed. The Grand Opening held in August served as the Step-Out event
during 2005. The route for the walk was changed and started at the old Dublin Senior Center and ended
at the new Senior Center, which was less than a mile. •
Proposed Event Plan for 2006
This year Staff proposes the walk begin and end at the Senior Center. Walkers would begin walking
eastbound on Amador Valley Boulevard, south on Village Parkway, west on Dublin Boulevard, north on
Regional Street, and then east on Amador Valley, ending at the Senior Center. This route would allow
participants to get a close look at the"Historic Crossroads Mural"on the underpasses of Interstate 680.
Following the walk, there would be a breakfast for the walkers and other members of the public. Staff
recommends offering a healthier menu than pancakes and sausage and is seeking recommendations from
the Committee on preferred offerings.
Entertainment would be held in the Ballroom during breakfast and between the workshops throughout the
day. Staff would like input on the type of entertainment to provide. The new theme "Connecting with
our Inner Spirit" allows for offering various workshops throughout the day to help seniors to learn mental
or physical exercises to calm the mind, body and spirit. For example Tai chi, Qi Gong, and other types of
Asian movement classes could be scheduled. Educational workshops could include teaching about
therapeutic activities such as"Spirit Clay",bio-feedback, and music therapy.
Vendors participating in the Information and Resource Fair would be spread throughout the building and
outdoor patio areas. One of the outdoor patio areas could also be used for a sports related activity such as
a basketball free-throw contest or table tennis tournament.
An art exhibition featuring the work of participants in the Senior Center art classes would be located in
the Arts and Crafts Room. There could also be special writings displayed that feature the work of
participants in the new poetry class held at the Senior Center.
Staff will seek and accept both monetary and in-kind donations from local grocers, service clubs, and the
Dublin Senior Foundation to offset the cost of the breakfast and t-shirts for the walkers. Staff will
continue to solicit the help of volunteers and service clubs to provide the necessary assistance with
implementing the event.
Although the event is free, in order to plan accordingly pre-registration will be required for the walk and:
breakfast. Drop-ins will be welcome for the other event components.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the Advisory Committee receive the report, provide input on the proposed program
plan and appoint two Committee Members to serve on a subcommittee to assist with event planning and
promotion.
