2005 Winter Quarterly Report
Staff gave a brief report on the 2005 Winter Quarter which includes the months of December 2004,
January 2005 and February 2005. A new class called the Moving Body sponsored by Las Positas College
was offered in January which replaced the Sit and Stretch Program offered on Thursday morning. In
December, a new monthly lunch program called Crossing Cultures was introduced and has doubled in
attendance each month. A Flu Clinic was offered in December for the first time in five years. Mt. Diablo
Rose Society hosted a Rose Pruning clinic in which over 80 hours of volunteer hours were accumulated
from a few key volunteers pruning 170 rose bushes at Emerald Glen Park. The Foundation increased their
attendance by offering Casino trips every month instead of every other month. The AARP hosted the
annual Tax Assistance Program which began in the month of February (and continues until the last tax
filing day in April). Overall, the Dublin Senior Center programs have been popular with the seniors.
There has been a slight drop in the attendance at the senior lunch program.
Programs and Activities for the New Senior Center
Based on the Dublin Senior Center Vision, Mission and Values formulated at the April Dublin Senior
Center Advisory Committee Meeting, Staff gave an overview of the activities that may be offered at the
new Senior Center. Staff, first, gave a brief overview of how classes and activities may be operated.
Classes may be sponsored by community colleges and adult schools in which instructors are provided free
in exchange for a room. Fee based classes include utilizing contract instructors who work for a
percentage of the class revenue. Businesses and sponsors like the Dublin Senior Foundation help by either
by providing or paying for a speaker or instructor. Programs, which are city-sponsored, usually charge a
.75 cent activity fee. These activities are usually conducted by staff, or volunteers who may be recruited
for their expertise.
Next, Staff recommended offering the following new programs at the new Senior Center.

More educational programs may be offered by Las Positas College, such as writing and art classes. Tai
Chi and other forms of heath and wellness classes to further challenge the mind, body and spirit may be
offered by a contract instructor. A conversational or beginning Spanish class may be offered by Amador
Valley Adult School
E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) may be offered by Amador Valley Adult School to attract ethnic
or minority groups who do not usually frequent the parks or City facilities. Other workshops may be
designed for a specific population in another language or translated in a second language.
The kitchen may be utilized in the afternoon after the lunch program by offering cooking and nutrition
classes in an effort to promote healthy eating habits. Staff may investigate partnering with health
organizations to promote exercise and fitness. Staff will also work closely with non-profit organizations,
such as Senior Support, local hospitals and support groups to offer senior services and informational
programs for seniors and their caregivers.
Staff plans to promote and support outdoor programs. Plans are underway to develop a Tri-Valley Senior
Olympics and Mini-Meet in the year 2006. Other possibilities may include senior sports such as softball
leagues, and a night of badminton at the Stager Gym. Staff may investigate ways to partner with other
sports and health organizations to promote individual sports such as golf, biking, and fishing. Staff would
use the Trail Trekkers Program as a model of how programs may be run by a volunteer.
Staff may also offer non-traditional services on-site and work with local businesses to offer such
programs as spa treatments, hair styling and massage therapy for seniors. Other health and wellness
classes may include meditation and a Reiki class. A chair, or gentle, exercise class may be offered by
Amador Valley Adult School to benefit the frail and elderly.
Home improvement workshops may be geared to widows and individuals to encourage "do-it-yourself'
home improvements. Staff can investigate partnering with local hardware and home improvement stores
to offer a specialty class for individuals.
Other suggestions from the Advisory Committee included tea-dances, ballroom dance instruction,
exercise in the afternoon, and real estate/finance programs. The Committee suggested that Staff make a
greater effort to advertise the programs in the local newspapers. A suggestion was made to ask local
newspapers to create a Dublin section in the newspapers so that.the Dublin Community can find out
quickly what activities are happening in Dublin, such as done by Independent News in Livermore, and the
Pleasanton Weekly.
Other Business
Burr Cain announced that he attended the Dublin Senior Foundation meeting on May 4 and stated that the
Foundation may donate funds to pay for some new equipment for the new Senior Center. These items
may include a large screen high-definition television, assisted listening equipment, kitchen equipment, a
keyboard piano, and a podium.
The Foundation in conjunction with the Dublin Lions Club and Dublin San Ramon Women's Club will be
seeking volunteers to help in the Fireworks booth at the end of June. The Grand Opening Banquet ideas
were well-received by the Foundation. Two of the Foundation's Board Members volunteered to
participate on the Planning Committee.
The dedication of Bray Commons Park will be on Saturday, May 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
