Core Values The core values are the qualities and beliefs that help form the foundation of the Dublin Senior Center. Instead of concentrating on the types of programs and activities that you would like the Senior Center to offer. Is it more important to begin thinking, "What are the QUALITIES that are most valued by patrons?" Staff conducted a "benefits" exercise to help the Committee focus on the attributes that may be gained by participating in an activity such as warm and welcoming, and not to solely concentrate on features of the Center, such as classes and events. To understand the concept of core values, the Committee participated in an exercise called the "Alpha Benefits". This exercise helps to create/identify the benefits that individuals may possibly receive from participating in activity. The Committee Members were asked to select words that start with the letters of the alphabet, A to Z, that best describes the "BENEFIT" gained when engaged in a particular activity. The following examples shared were A is for awareness, B for bonding, C for camaraderie and so on. Vision The vision statement describes the preferred future of the Dublin Senior Center. It uses language to convey how success would look and feel, and reflect the unique goals, values, aspirations and concerns of the Dublin Senior Center. Each Committee Member was asked to describe what inspired them to serve on the Dublin Senior Center Advisory Committee and what new activity or idea they would like Staff to offer at the new Senior Center. CM Al Edge wanted the Center to have an active, expanded website that would explain the various services, and share the goals of the Senior Center. CM Edge wanted the new Center to be a "comfort zone"and be a place for seniors to "hang out". CM Luis Batiza shared that he would like to see more lectures and educational sessions offered on issues relating to health, finance and money management. He wanted the information of the Center publicized more outside the Center and be more easily accessible to the Community. CM Barbara Gifford felt that the Center should feel like home or an extension of home. She likes activities that encourage social interaction. She actively supports senior organizations, such as Senior Support, who aid in the comfort of seniors and to help seniors solve problems through case management. CM Gifford shared that she felt that the Center should be a place of learning and an opportunity for seniors to serve the Community through volunteerism. Another suggestion was made to select volunteer recruiters who would identify and encourage seniors to participate in as well as support the Senior Center. The goal of a recruiter is to increase attendance while providing Staff with information to identify the needs and ideas of new patrons who frequent the Center. Minutes—January 6, 2005 Page 3 of 3 Mission The mission statement describes the "business" of the Dublin Senior Center and explains how Staff will accomplish the Senior Center's vision. Staff encouraged the Committee Members to begin thinking of the mission, by asking themselves, "What difference is made in individuals, the community, the environment, and the economy through the Dublin Senior Center." What are the benefits provided?" Staff was asked to develop a draft mission statement based on the input given at this meeting and present it to the Committee at a future meeting. Other Business Burr Cain, the Liaison from the Parks and Community Services Commission, updated the Committee on . the newest Commission appointments. CM Payton confirmed that she will attend the January Parks and Community Services Commission meeting to represent the Committee on issues and programs that serve the Senior Community.
