FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Dublin Senior Center will sponsor its Fourth Annual "Step Out for Senior Centers" event. Staff proposed holding the event on Saturday, May 21, 2005. The theme for the 2005 event has not been determined but last year the theme was titled: "Living Well, Aging Well"; Staff used the theme of the 2004 "Older American's Month" to promote active living and learning for seniors. Background The "Step Out" Event was originally created to celebrate Senior Center Awareness Week and Older Americans Month and was co-sponsored by the California Park and Recreation Society Aging Services and Activities Section. Held on the third Saturday of May, this event traditionally began with a one-mile walk around the Dublin Senior Center at 9:00 a.m. and included a free breakfast and a display of services and resources available to seniors. Additionally, senior service providers serving Dublin were invited to attend the event. During the past two years, Mayor Lockhart has graciously lead the walk. Last year the route was increased to 1.5 miles, starting at the Dublin Library and ending at the Dublin Senior Center. ■ Last year, an Art Show venue was added featuring the senior artists from the Dublin Senior Center. The purpose of the Art Exhibit was to showcase the talented artists and provide exposure of Senior Center programs to the greater community. Participants of the Art Show were invited to the breakfast at the Senior Center. Event Goals This year's event goals continue to: - Promote the activities and programs of the Dublin Senior Center - Promote health and wellness and the visual arts - Educate the public about the senior services available to seniors and their families by featuring workshops and activities with outside senior social services agencies. COPIES TO: ITEM NO. 7.1 G:\SRCTRADVCMTE\Statements\2005\20305 Step Out.doc In order to accomplish the goals, Staff recommends using the same format and schedule as last year. In addition, Staff recommends the Chairperson appoint two Advisory Committee Members to serve on a subcommittee to assist Staff with planning and promoting the event. Using input from the Advisory Committee meeting, the subcommittee will meet with Staff to prepare a detailed program plan which will be presented at a future Advisory Committee meeting. Donations to Help offset the Cost of the Event Staff will seek and accept both monetary and in-kind donations from local grocers, service clubs, and the Dublin Senior Foundation to offset the cost of the breakfast, and the t-shirts. Last year donations by Safeway Grocers and the Dublin Senior Foundation helped offset the cost of the breakfast expenses. Staff will continue to solicit the help of volunteers and service clubs to provide the necessary assistance with implementing the event. Registration and Fee • The event is free to senior participants and their friends and family members. Registration is required. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Committee receive the report, provide input on the proposed program plan and appoint two Committee Members to serve on a subcommittee to assist with event planning and promotion. • Page 2 of 2
