HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-02-2010 SCAC Minutes CITY O DVALIN SENIOR= NT.ER ISORY CO?M�1 IT E XES OFD 10E BER.2°10 tragER3 s©cp-iDT Call to Order Chairperson Baron called the meeting to order at 9:35 a.m. Roll Call: Committee Members (CM)Present: Martin Baron,Delilah Vanderpool and Eddie Jo Mack Absent: Diane Bonetti and Tim Pedersen Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison: Rich Guarienti Staff Present: Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator; Diane Guenther, Office Assistant Oral Communications Representative Sue Han, from Legal Assistance for Senior and Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program gave a presentation of their services. Public Comments-None Rich Guarienti addressed the Advisory Committee as a private citizen. Guarienti proposed an Activity Fee structure that involves the amount of time a classroom is used. H suggested for activities of an hour or less in length to charge $1 and for 2 hours to charge $2 or more if there are miscellaneous costs involved or more time needed. Approval of the Minutes— THE OCTOBER 7, 2010 MINUTES WERE AMENDED AS FOLLOWS; 2010 SUMMER QUARTERLY REPORT "She sh-aped stated that although there were some significant changes..."CM BARON MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE OCTOBER MINUTES AS AMENDED; CM VANDERPOOL SECONDED THE MOTION. THE ADIVSORY COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE OCOTBER 7, 2010 MEETING AS AMENDED WITH CM MACK ABSTAINING. THE NOVEMBER 4, 2010 MINUTES WERE AMENDED AS FOLLOWS; COFFEE WITH THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE FUTURE PROGRAMMING INTERESTS FOR SENIORS was moved from under the heading New Business to Oral Communications. New Business — None and Other Business—None. CM BARON MADE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE NOVEMBER MINUTES AS AMENDED; CM VANDERPOOL SECONDED THE MOTION. THE ADIVSORY COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MINUTES OF THE OCOTBER 7, 2010 MEETING AS AMENDED WITH CM MACK ABSTAINING. Written Communication—None Unfinished Business—None New Business The Advisory Committee engaged in a discussion about the results from the November Public Input Workshop. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF DECEMBER 2,2010 PAGE 2 OF 3 CM Baron and Guarienti thanked Staff for putting the meeting together and felt that making personal contact was beneficial to get more people to attend. Guarienti also commented that this is yet another great marketing tool. CM Baron suggested the possibility of conducting a public input workshop every six months. He recommended contacting those in attendance to invite them to the next public input workshop. McCreary noted that an email blast was sent out to approximately 600 older adults that are current customers of the Depaitinent. CM Baron stated that the comments he has heard about the lunch program included people not wanting to fill out the Spectrum Community Services application form and just wanting to drop in for lunch. CM Mack noted that as a volunteer Greeter there are some issues with reading, writing and understanding the Spectrum application form. McCreary indicated Staff will look at the possibility of obtaining the form in other languages. Guarienti commented he heard people were missing the Crossing Cultures luncheons. Staff is trying to find someone who will cook all different types of meals and is also looking at restaurants to provide the meals so these cultural experiences can be reintroduced to the special luncheons. CM Vanderpool suggested a Dessert Crossing Cultures instead of an entire lunch. CM Vanderpool noted that people are missing the Trips and Tours program. Staff stated that the van is out of service for one year and Staff is looking at alternatives to reinstate the program next Fiscal Year. Vanderpool suggested conducting a bus tour of Dublin for seniors similar. to the trip offered by Dublin 101 workshop combined with a picnic lunch at a local park. Guarienti suggested offering parks tour. Guarienti suggested the use of carpools will enable people to get out and about. He suggested that Staff check with the Chamber of Commerce for local discounts, and suggested offering a walking tour similar to format used in the Urban Explorers walking group. CM Baron suggested the action from the Public Input meeting be publicized to demonstrate how the Advisory Committee is action oriented, and Staff communicates the outcomes to the participants. Hudson suggested the Advisory Committee Members participate as Greeters as a way to build one-on-one relationships with patrons. Other Business There was no Foundation Report. Guarienti provided a brief overview of the October 18th Parks Commission meeting. This will be his last meeting as the Commission representative there will be a new representative next month.
