HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-01-2010 SCAC Minutes • CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE E NUTES OF APRIL 1,2010 ._• _)JITEgR ©CD]cDW Call to Order Chairperson Baron called the meeting to order at 9:34 a.m. Roll Call: • Committee Members(CM)Present:Martin Baron,Delilah Vanderpool,Tim Pedersen and Diane Bonetti Absent: Al Edge Parks and Community Services Commission Liaison Present: Rich Guarienti Staff Present: Paul McCreary, Assistant Director of Parks and Community Services; Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator;Diane Guenther,Office Assistant • Oral Communications Introduction and Recognition of Senior Spotlight Recipients Chairperson Baron introduced two Senior Spotlight recipients: Zelda Burnford (January/February) and Tony Stabile (March/April). CM Vanderpool presented Zelda and Tony with a Senior Center Advisory Committee Certificate of Recognition. Hudson reviewed Zelda and Tony's contributions to the Senior Center; Zelda volunteers with writing and editing m bli Doings value g e they add newsletter, and Tony Senior is a Foundation Member and weekly bingo caller. Written Communication—None Unfinished Business-None New Business VOLUNTEER AMBASSADOR DESCRIPTION Hudson provided the Advisory Committee with an overview of the Volunteer Ambassador job description as outlined in the agenda statement. Guarienti commented that he thought Staff did great work on the Volunteer Ambassador job description. He suggested removing the time commitment section; he commented that making a monthly 15 to 30 minute presentation was a bit rigorous. Hudson indicated she would remove this requirement. Guarienti brought in his polo shirt and pin from the East Bay Regional Park District's Ambassador Program to show the Advisory Committee Members. He suggested the Senior Center provide a shirt (or a pin) for the Senior Center Volunteer Ambassadors to wear. Guarienti suggested scheduling Ambassadors to work alongside Staff to be trained how to work at information tables and make presentations. CM Baron asked what the Committee Members thought about having designated "hobnobbers". Staff noted that hobnobbing is a desirable character for the Greeter position. CM Baron suggested seeking and identifying people who are considered"hobnobbers"to be potential Ambassadors. CM Baron suggested the Ambassadors make presentations or work at events in teams of two. CITY OF DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES OF APRIL 1,2010 PAGE 2 OF 3 Zelda Burnford asked about the possibility of making a video commercial to be linked to the Senior Center website. McCreary indicated the new website would be completed this summer and has the capability to stream video over the Internet. He noted that the project would require a digital video camera as well as volunteers to complete the project. CM Baron commented that the development of the Ambassador Program has been long awaited and anticipated, and congratulated Hudson on being persistent. PICNIC IN THE PARK Hudson provided the Advisory Committee with an overview of this activity as outlined in the agenda statement. She noted that CM Vanderpool had done the early leg work on this project as part of her work on the Advisory Committee strategic goals. CM Pedersen asked how many attendees were anticipated and if the number of attendees would be limited. McCreary indicated the park has picnic seating for 80, and Staff is planning for up to 100 attendees. Additional tables and chairs can be rented as needed,and shade covers will be set up. Tony Stabile suggested offering bingo as a draw to the event. After some discussion the Advisory Committee suggested that Staff find out if the Dublin Senior Foundation would donate $100 for purchasing prizes for bingo and then make it free for participants, as many residents at the Groves are on a fixed income. Hudson will follow- up with the Foundation. CM Bonetti suggested obtaining gift certificates to In and Out Burger. Stabile offered to run the bingo games. CM Vanderpool suggested placing the flyer advertising Picnic in the Park in every mail box at the Groves and Wicklow Apartments. Staff will provide copies to the resident coordinators at each facility. OTHER BUSINESS Guarienti gave a brief report on the Parks and Community Services Commission meeting. The City will not be scheduling the Day on the Glen for 2010. He spoke briefly about the 2010 Day Camp programs. As an ambassador for the East Bay Regional Park District, Guarienti met Bob Coomer; a wheelchair-bound hiker, and suggested inviting him to the Senior Center as a motivational speaker. Guarienti attended the Dublin Senior Center volunteer orientation presented by the new Volunteer Coordinator, and was very impressed. CM Bonetti noted the Dublin Senior Center Foundation's April meeting is next week. She reported the Foundation provided volunteers to work at the St.Patrick's Day Celebration. SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES There were no reports this month. CM Baron commented there has not been an Advisory Committee meeting update on the marketing plan and if one would be planned. McCreary noted that this item was on the agenda in August 2009.The Advisory Committee will review marketing annually and be placed on the August 2010 agenda after the budget has been adopted and Staff has a chance to develop the plan accordingly. • CM Baron reviewed the Parks Commission presentation schedule. CM Baron will attend the April 19`h meeting; CM Bonetti will cover the May 17th meeting,and CM Vanderpool volunteered to attend the June 215`meeting. The City Manager bea available sending toout a community of the ty survey to gauge e what is important to Dublin citizens. The survey will be Guide,online,and may be dropped off at any City facility.
