They are always very helpful and pleasant to all of the Jazzercise group. I know that usually we hear complaints but not so often compliments, so please know how much we appreciate them. Thanks." BV, Jazzercise Owner • Wow, very cool ... We really enjoyed being there (at the Senior Center) yesterday for the Japan focus. It really did feel like an immersion in that culture - you and Anna did a great job, and, of course, Kathy's food was fantastic!! I'll hope to come to each one either as a volunteer or a paying customer who very much appreciates all the work you and Anna and others do to provide so much COPIES TO: ITEM NO: 7.1 G:\SRADVCMTE\Statements\2010\50610 Item 7.1 Winter Quarterly Report.doc for the seniors in Dublin and the Tri-Valley. CP, San Ramon • Hello, Dear Dublin Senior Reception Desk: I was pleased to receive the cheer greeting card with the signed messages from all of you. Thank you. The card added to my happiness about getting home after five days in the hospital. Another happy thing is that I am all well now and will be taking park in classes again. Where? The Dublin Senior Center of course. I will see you soon! Thank you again! Love and Hugs. RV, Dublin Following is a summary of activities offered during the winter quarter. DECEMBER For the month of December, the Dublin Senior Center offered several holiday activities. By popular demand, the 3 O'clock Jump Band returned to ring in the holidays at the Holly Day Affair Dance Event. Approximately 110 seniors danced the night away to the sounds of big band music. Delicious food coupled with fantastic entertainment make the special luncheons popular. The Winter Wonderland Special Luncheon was filled to capacity where 123 meals were served. Chef Cathy served a special menu featuring prime rib while 70 students from three Foothill High School Choirs entertained the audience with holiday music. The annual wreath making class, taught by long time volunteer Gale Gifford, attracted a dozen seniors to make their own live wreathes. Volunteers enjoyed a Saturday afternoon Holiday Party including being treated to performance by various youth choirs singing and playing an assortment of holiday music and songs. The Ukulele &Hula class held an end of the year Holiday Party where the students performed what they learned. There were three exciting day trips this month. The trip to Sonora featured a musical performance of Sinatra classics at Columbia State Park's Fallon Theater. The trip to the Korbel Winery offered last minute shopping opportunities for the holidays. The final destination for the month was to Healdsburg's historic downtown plaza for the annual holiday fair. JANUARY The year began with three special activities including a special luncheon, a Crossing Cultures lunch and a social dance. The New Year's Luncheon featured Steven Gary on vocals and guitar while 75 seniors feasted on Cornish game hens. The Crossing Cultures program took 42 seniors on a virtual tour of Poland while pirogues and Polish sausage were served for lunch. The first dance of the year featured the Hayward Adult School's, "What's Up?Big Band", that played for 102 dancers. The Dublin Senior Center introduced two new senior services: free dental screening on first Tuesdays of the month, and Wheels Travel Training Counseling on 2nd Tuesdays every other month. In addition, the Senior Center introduced a Yamuna Foot Exercise Workshop on the first Saturday of the month. Devoted intermediate ukulele students continued to meet and practice on their own despite the ukulele instructor's absence. This month a Tahitian dance class was offered instead of her usual Hula class. The trips in January were postponed due to van being vandalized. A Black Oak Casino Trip was scheduled by the Foundation. FEBRUARY The Senior Center welcomed back the Livermore Valley Opera which delighted the audience at the Annual Friendship Luncheon where 69 seniors were served. The Dublin Rotary cosponsored this event, and the seniors enjoyed pan-seared chicken topped with mushroom gravy. Page 2 of 4 The Crossing Cultures program presented 61 seniors information about Japan. Volunteers of Japanese descent presented a sushi making demonstration; how to wear a kimono; and tea ceremony. Anna Hudson and friends displayed their extensive collection of Japanese memorabilia. The Dublin Senior Center had a wonderful Arthritis Acupressure Workshop on Saturday that attracted 32 people. A new Latin Rhythms Dance Workshop was also introduced. Instruction was offered by Luis Valverde from Las Positas Community College to 32 students. Both trips in February visited San Jose for Cirque du Soleil's new show, OVO. It was so popular that a second trip was offered to accommodate the waiting list. On the first trip, the van carried 14 passengers with 2 additional seniors who drove down for the show on their own. The second trip had 13 participants. A Cache Creek Casino Trip was scheduled this month by the Foundation. The Senior Center Advisory Committee hosted a joint meeting with the Youth Advisory Committee at the Dublin Senior Center. The Advisory Committee in attendance were Diane Bonetti, Delilah Vanderpool, Marty Baron, and Parks and Community Services Commission Rep., Rich Guarienti. Additional senior guests included Connie Mack, Paula Mack, Joan Olguin, Zelda Burnford, Lee Sandeman, and Virginia Baron. The evening consisted of three breakout sessions where the seniors and teens brainstormed, identified common interests, and prioritized possible intergenerational activities to be offered in the future. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM The City hired a new Volunteer Coordinator, Melanie Triantos. She brings her organizational skills and Human Resources expertise to the Volunteer Program. Currently there are 145 active volunteers; since mid-January, Triantos concentrated her efforts in meeting each volunteer. Most of the active volunteers have completed the newest application form and been made aware of new City policies and procedures. During the orientation, volunteers were informed of the benefits and the importance of logging in their volunteer hours. The Senior Center successfully recruited six qualified volunteers for the Greeter Program. The senior patrons are comfortable in receiving resources from the Greeters. Through monthly scheduled meetings and trainings, the Greeters are being trained so they will be received more like a concierge than a sales person. They are looking for ways to accurately track information about the patrons and compile a list of frequency asked questions. SENIOR CENTER RENTALS The Dublin Senior Center is available for rental by the community, the city and depaitment events on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. During the winter quarter there were nine facility rentals, which is a decrease from the prior year. This is attributable to the opening of the Shannon Community Center in February 2009. Following is a summary of facility rentals.
