HomeMy WebLinkAbout7.1 Brainstorming Saturday Program Ideas (CO ati6N 19 —Op 82 AGENDA STATEMENT SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE IFOR �� MEETING DATE: FEBRUARY 4, 2010 SUBJECT: Brainstorm Saturday Program Ideas Report Prepared by Anna Hudson, Recreation Coordinator ATTACHMENTS: None RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and provide input on program ideas FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: At the January 4, 2010 Senior Center Advisory Committee meeting, the Advisory Committee suggested brainstorming new activities and classes for the 2010 Saturday morning programs. In September 2009, the Dublin Senior Center began offering Saturday morning activities. Currently there is an average of 70 people attending programs on Saturday mornings. Currently the following activities are being offered: Ballroom Room C/D Room B 8:30—9:30 am—Jazzercise 8:30-9:30 am—Open 9:00 am-12:00 pm -Ping Pong 9:30-10:30 am—Open 10:00 -11:00 am—Ukulele (closed on the first Saturday) 10:30— 12:00 pm- Line Dance 11:00 am -12:00 pm- Open Staff will continue to try and find volunteers or contracted instructors to expand the existing activities that are popular during the week to the weekend as well. The following is a list of possible new activities that Staff could also pursue pending the ability to secure volunteer leaders, or contract instructors to provide the activities. • Capturing Memories on Disc—An intergenerational activity involving Power Point and Digital Video • Performance Groups (Choral, Jam Band, Theatrical, etc.) • Blast from the Past—A little known history of Dublin: I have the pictures to prove it. • ESL Living Skills • Cooking for one or two • Nutrition COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 7.1 C:\Documents and Settings\annah\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK97\20410 Item 7 1 $rainstonn Saturday Program Ideas (4).doc • • Chi Gong and Tai Chi • Sing-a-longs • R.O.M.E.O. Club (Retired Older Men Eating Out) • J.U.L.I.E.T. Club (Just Us ladies informally eating together) • R.A.L.L.I. for Fun - Reviving Active Lifestyles &Leisure Interests for Fun • Caregiver Workshops and Support Groups to maintain strong families • Wii Drop In Play • Sports at Fallon Sports Park • Computer Art and Design Classes • Retirement Planning (financial and activity/leisure pursuits) Staff encourages the Advisory Committee Members to think of other ideas to share with the group at the meeting. The Committee Members will then go through an exercise to determine the high priority programs for Staff to focus on in the next six months. As noted the addition of these activities will be dependent on finding volunteer leaders or contracted programs that will cover any direct costs with user registration fees. The objective is to have activities in each room throughout the morning by the fall. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Advisory Committee receive the report and provide input on the program ideas.
