DESCRIPTION: Staff is planning the 2nd Annual "Picnic in the Park" event. This
event was created last year to meet one of the Advisory Committee's strategic goals to expand outreach to
older adults in the community and promote the Senior Center. Those attending the picnic will be able to
participate in a variety of fun outdoor activities in a park setting while learning more about the activities
offered at the Senior Center.
Staff plans to hold the event at Emerald Glen Park, located on 4201 Central Parkway near Tassajara Road
(just north of Dublin Blvd). The event is tentatively scheduled to be held on Friday, June 17, from 11:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This event will allow seniors the opportunity to explore and appreciate Emerald Glen Park, one of the
City of Dublin's premier outdoor facilities. The park offers natural shading, two bocce courts located
near the picnic shelter, as well as other amenities. Although Emerald Glen is not adjacent to The Groves
Senior Apailluent Complex, it provides better amenities for the event and food preparation.
Staff plans to offer a greater span of activities. Last year one-card bingo, miniature golf, spin the wheel,
croquet, a basketball free-throw contest, beach-ball volleyball, lawn bowling, parachute games, and
frisbee golf were offered. This year, Staff will invite the instructors that teach classes at the Senior Center
to participate in the picnic as part of the entertainment, to showcase their class and demonstrate the
abundance and variety of Dublin Senior Center activities. Instructors can pass out information and talk to
prospective students. For example, dance instructors can perform a few dances, the Melody Minstrels can
sing a few songs and the Path Wanderers can lead a nature walk around the park. Some of the popular
entertainers from the special luncheons may be interspersed between the class demonstrations. The menu
will include barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers with all of the fixings, a cool salad, and dessert.
