TO: Honorable Chair and Committee Members
FROM: Rich Jochner, Recreation Supervisor
SUBJECT: Trips and Tours Program Report
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Senior Center Advisory Committee will receive a report on the Trips and Tours Program.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
RECOMMENDATION:

DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Trips &Tours program was reinstated in 2011 with the goal of providing affordable and enjoyable
outings for seniors to interesting destinations.
There were ten van trips in 2016 with a total attendance of 120 patrons. Destinations included Ann Nuevo,
Apple Hill, Carmel, Columbia State Park, Filoli Estate & Gamble Gardens, Korbel Champagne Cellars, Marc
Island, Monterey, Pebble Beach, and Sausalito. For the first half of 2017, there are scheduled trips to Allied
Arts Guild Gardens, Amorosa Castle, Cannery Row, Carmel, Filoli Estate, Hakone Gardens, Ironstone
Vineyards,Jamestown& Sonora, Old Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and 17-Mile Drive.
The Senior Center Van can accommodate 14 passengers and one driver. Additionally, by folding up the last
row of seats, the van becomes handicapped and wheelchair accessible. In this configuration, the van can
accommodate 12 passengers, a wheelchair and a driver. A motorized chair lift provides wheelchair access to
the passenger area. With either option, the City Staff driver is required to possess a current Class B Driver's
License. In order to obtain a Class B Driver's License, a physical exam is required as well as a driver's exam.
The City Staff driver also acts as the escort on each trip.
All destinations are within a two hour drive of Dublin. The maximum travel time is four hours, round trip.
Patrons are allowed to spend time at the destination at least equal to the total amount of travel time. A break
for lunch is included in the itinerary, but the meal itself is usually non-hosted. This allows patrons the

flexibility to choose their own meal. Stops are scheduled where a variety of restaurants and cafes with
different prices are located so that the patrons can opt for an eating place of their choice.
Trips are advertised in the City's Activity Guide and Dublin Doings senior newsletter, and on the City
website. Trip flyers are also available at the Dublin Senior Center. Dublin resident registration opens one
week prior to non-resident registration. All patrons must have a current emergency form on file. Full payment
is due at the time of registration. A minimum of ten pre-paid registrants is usually required for a trip to be
held. Full trip refunds will be issued only when the Senior Center cancels a trip. If a patron withdraws from a
trip before the registration deadline, a refund will be granted. Withdrawal after the registration deadline results
in the forfeiture of the registration fee unless the space can be sold to a person on the waiting list.
The program is designed to fully recover direct costs of using the Senior Van. Some of the direct costs
include the hourly cost of a driver, ongoing vehicle inspections, periodic oil changes and maintenance, van
wash and fuel consumption. Following are the base registration fees approved by the City Council:
• Local (4-hour) Trips for Residents: $20-$25;Non-Residents: $24-$30
• Local (8-hour) Trips for Residents: $35-$45; Non-Residents: $42-$54
• Distant (8-10-hour) Trips for Residents: $40-$50; Non-Resident: $48-$60
Admission or tour fees are in addition to the base registration fees.
