EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Commission will receive the Winter 2018 Quarterly Report on classes, activities,
and events conducted during the months of December, 2017 through February, 2018.

DESCRIPTION:
The Parks and Community Services Department develops and implements quality
programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational experiences, and
encourage healthy lifestyles. The following is a summary of the programs and events
offered by the Parks and Recreation Division during the winter quarter.
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Recreational and leisure activities serve participants of all ages and provide positive
recreational experiences. By participating in these classes, community members are
given the opportunity to enhance their health, well-being, and community connection.
Classes provide opportunities to learn a new craft or refine current skills, as well as
provide a venue to meet others in the com munity and recreate with friends.
Recreational and leisure activities are planned and implemented by contracted specialty
instructors.
During the winter period, popular classes for youth included Competitive Debates, Tiny
Tots Science and Parent and Me Gymnastics. Popular adult classes included Zumba,
Pilates and Bombay Jam. A total of 185 participants registered for recreational activities

in 25 classes held during the winter session. Though a total of 45 classes were offered,
20 of those, the majority of which were youth enrichment classes, were cancelled due to
not meeting the minimum registration. Staff is working with instructors to offer more
classes/camps during school breaks, teacher workdays, and weekends, as well as
offering more preschool age classes/camps.
The following is a summary of registration:
DUBLIN PRESCHOOL
The Dublin Preschool Program is a recreation-based preschool program that provides
an opportunity for social and educational development under the instruction of qualified
early childhood educators. Children in this program participate in games, learning
activities, outdoor play, arts and crafts, music, story time, and circle time. Classes are
offered at two locations: Shannon Community Center and Dublin Elementary School.
The Preschool Program operates in three classrooms (two at Shannon Community
Center and one at Dublin Elementary) and offers a total of seven classes. Classes are
offered in two-day-per-week and three-day-per-week combinations during the mornings
or afternoons located at the Shannon Community Center. There is also a four-day-per-
week class option for four-year-olds during the mornings at Dublin Elementary School
and afternoons at Shannon Community Center.
Dublin Preschool Staff at Dublin Elementary is continuing to partner with the Dublin
Elementary Special Education teachers to offer the “Peers Make Awesome Partners”
(PMAP) program. PMAP is an inclusion program that provides positive peer interaction
with Dublin Elementary preschoolers and special needs preschoolers. For one hour
each day, preschoolers participate in learning activities that include story time, songs,
play time, and Kimochis (meaning “feelings” in Japanese).
There was a total of 141 registrations for the winter, with 86 registrations for the four-
year-old classes and 55 registrations for the three -year-old classes. The decrease in
registration was due to the Monday, Wednesday, Friday four-year-old afternoon class
being cancelled due to low enrollment. The following is a summary of registration:

**The Preschool offers eight classes instead of the 11 classes that were offered in at the
previous preschool location at the Emerald Glen Activity Center.
Preschool Winter Program Event
Dublin Preschool participants entertained their fami lies with two choreographed dance
songs at the “2018 Winter Program” event. The program was held on January 31 and
February 1 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM at the Shannon Community Center. A combined total of
600 people attended the performances.
“Little Lovies” Story Time
The Little Lovies program was offered from January through February for six weeks, on
Mondays from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Due to the classroom undergoing construction until
the beginning of January, registration for each day (Monday through Thursd ay) didn’t
meet the minimum enrollment. As such, Staff combined all four days into a Monday
class. There was a total of 12 children registered for the winter. The following is a
summary of registration:
FAMILY SERVICES
After School Recreation
After School Recreation is a program for children in first through fifth grades. The
program operates on school days at all public elementary schools in Dublin ; it begins
once the children are released from school and ends at 5:45 PM. Participants engage
in activities such as indoor and outdoor games, crafts, and quiet time for homework.
There were 453 participants registered for the winter program. Full -Session registration
increased 24% in comparison to last fall. This year, to offer more Full-Session spots,
the 20-day pass was revised to an Early Release pass (participants attend only during
Dublin Unified School District Minimal and Collaboration days), which contributed to the
increase in Full-Session registration numbers. The following is a summary of

Student Union After School Program
The Student Union After School Program is designed specifically for middle school
students, emphasizing academic assistance and recreation enrichment. The Student
Union Program provides middle school students a safe environment to engage in
positive activities that enhance their social, intellectual, physical and emotional
development. The program takes place after school, on -campus, at both Wells Middle
School and Fallon Middle School. It offers a variety of fun activities, including
educational programs, sporting activities, arts and crafts, science projects , and musical
activities. The program also features the popular Homework Club. The Homework
Club has a credentialed teacher that provides homework as sistance during the first hour
of the program each day. There were 94 participants registered for the winter program.
Full-Session registration increased 29% in comparison to last fall. This year, to offer
more Full-Session spots, the 20-day pass was revised to an Early Release pass

SPORTS
Basketball Clinics and Lessons
The City offers two types of pre-season youth basketball clinics in addition to contracted
basketball classes. The skill-building clinic is focused on teaching a new skill over four
evenings and is conducted by City Staff. A half-day clinic of fundamental basketball
instruction for younger ages was taught by former Dublin High School Coach Chris
Meredith. To accommodate additional Junior Warriors pre -season activities (Jamborees
and Skill Evaluations), beginner clinics and private lessons were not offered. The

following is a summary of registration:
Youth Basketball League
The Junior Warriors Youth Basketball League is for boys and girls, kindergarten through
eighth grade. Games were played on Saturdays at Stager Community Gym, Wells
Middle School, Fallon Middle School and Fallon Multipurpose Room beginning on
January 6 and ending on March 3.
Program registration was down 9% from last season due to kindergarten through
second grade age groups participating in contracted classes as opposed to leagues.
However, six of the 12 leagues were completely full with a total of 839 participants on
82 teams. Games and practices were held weekly. Coaches received commemorative
gifts for volunteering. The following is a summary of registration:
Contracted Sports Programs
Each quarter, the City offers several sports programs through contracted specialty
instructors. Contracted classes offered during the winter included Arora Tennis, Kidz
Love Soccer, Make Me a Pro Basketball, and Wee Hoop Basketball. A new Skyhawks

basketball class was added this quarter. Registration for contract ed sports programs
increased 60%, primarily in tennis lessons and soccer. The f ollowing is a summary of
registration:
Adult Basketball League
A Men’s 5-on-5 “D” league was conducted during the winter quarter. The league began
in January and ended in April. Games were held on Sundays at Stager Community
Gym. The following is a summary of registration:
SENIOR CENTER
The Dublin Senior Center offers activities and events that promote healthy living for
seniors, and the opportunity to build new f riendships through recreation. The following is
a summary of registration:
The Senior Center now has a visitor counting device at the entrance
to the facility, which provides a more accurate picture of daily
attendance. The attendance numbers for 2017 and prior years shown
above were much higher in reality than reported, as Staff had not been
tallying weekend and evening attendance.

W hen compared to the previous winter quarter, volunteer hours and
participation numbers decreased, as a few key front desk volunteers and
volunteer instructors were
on leave. Staff expects these numbers to increase in the future with the return of these
volunteers.
The daily lunch program served 1,548 lunches. Programs at the Senior Center that
continue to show large participation numbers were The Line Dance classes, Bridge,
Ping-Pong, and the Melody Minstrels Jam Sessions.
The following events and tours occurred during the winter:
December
On Monday, December 4, 2017, staff of the Senior Support Program provided
free health screenings for seniors.
On Friday, December 8, 2017, the Senior Center hosted its annual Holiday
Dance Escape event. Participants enjoyed, refreshments, live music from Lady K
and the Kings of Swing, and dancing.
On Wednesday, December 20, 2017 and Thursday, December 21, 2017 Connect
Hearing provided free hearing screenings and hearing aid cleaning/repair for
participants of the Senior Center.
February
On Tuesday, February 6, 2018 Alameda County Public Health hosted a Diabetes
Support Group at the Dublin Senior Center.
On Saturday, February 10, 2018 Travelers took a trip to the California Academy
of Sciences in San Francisco.
On Saturday, February 10, 2018 the Dublin Senior Foundation hosted a
Valentine’s Day BINGO Fling event where participants enjoyed a catered lunch,
live entertainment, and BINGO.
On Thursday, February 22, 2018 staff members of the Senior Support Program
provided a free workshop on Finding Wellness - Brain Health.
New activities were introduced this winter:
On Thursday, January 4, 2018 a new Yoga teacher was introduced and will be
offering a beginner yoga and an adaptive yoga for participants of the Senior
Center.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Jordan Ranch Neighborhood Park Opening
Approximately 500 people attended the February 10, 2018 grand opening of Jordan
Ranch Neighborhood Park. The City provided free bagels, fruit, coffee and juice, and

colorful souvenir Frisbees. Recreation Leaders were on hand to facilitate children’s field
games, and loaner volleyballs and basketballs were available for youth and adults to
use on the new court areas. The park includes separate play structures for ages 2 -5
and ages 6-12, as well as barbecues, picnic tables, restroom, a drinking fountain, and
walkways connecting to the adjacent trail.
YOUTH FEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Youth Fee Assistance program promotes access to City recreational classes and
activities by providing eligible Dublin youth financial assistance with registration fees.
The program is funded by private donations and a match from the City, with overall
contributions totaling $24,594.69 for the year. Contributions included a generous
donation of $10,000 from Kaiser, and a variety of contributions coming from various
registration and youth program donations. There are currently 77 active participants ,
reflecting a 28% increase from last year’s active participants.
AQUATICS PROGRAMS - THE WAVE
Recreational Swimming
The Wave offered recreational swimming in the Natatorium on Fridays 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
and Saturdays and Sundays 12:30 to 4:00 PM. for a total of 35 days. Recreational
swimming is for all ages. The following is a summary of recreational swimming:
Birthday Party Program
The Wave birthday party package includes space for one reserved party in the Viewing
Room during Recreational Swim times on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The
package also includes park admission for each guest, pizza, beverages, utensils and
colorful napkins, plates and table cloth. The f ollowing is a summary of winter birthday
parties:
Private Pool Rentals
Community groups, businesses and individuals can rent each amenity at The Wave
individually or in any combination, including a full facility buyout . The Wave is available
for private rentals when it is not in use for programs or recreational swimming. Rental
attendance is determined by the party host. This winter there was one private
Natatorium buyout for a birthday party. The following is a summary of rentals:

Swim Lessons
The Wave Swim School is open year-round in the Natatorium. Lessons are
programmed for beginning through advanced levels and are available for children six
months and older through adults. The Natatorium provides a comfortable indoor
swimming environment and was specifically designed as a teaching pool with three
teaching bays and lap lane space. The following is a summary of swim lessons:
Fitness Programs
The Wave’s fitness programs include Aqua Zumba, Lap Swimming and Wate r Walking.
Aqua Zumba
One session of six classes was offered during the winter on Saturdays at 8:30 AM. The
following is a summary of the Aqua Zumba classes:
Lap Swimming and Water Walking
Participants have the option to purchase a daily admission fe e or a Fitness
Convenience Pass for pre-paid admissions at a discounted rate. Lap Swimming
includes morning and evening sessions on weekdays and weekends. The following is a
summary of lap swim and water walking:
