Public Works PRC Comments
The following comments represent the Public Works issues associated with the subject application.
COMMENTS:
Driving over an existing curb and sidewalk is not allowed under any circumstance because of potential
damage to the sidewalk and curb. The sidewalks and curbs are not designed to take loads other than
pedestrians. According to City standards detail SO-306 regular driveways are constructed with 6" thick
concrete to accommodate traffic loads such as a car or an RV. In contrast Sidewalks are constructed
only using 4" thick concrete without steel reinforcement. The structural integrity of a typical sidewalk is
not adequate to support vehicle loads.
In addition the City typically limits width of residential driveways to 20' to assure adequate on-street
parking for the neighborhood. Widening the existing driveway approach will eliminate needed on-street
parking. Therefore the Public Works Department recommends that the applicant use the existing
driveway approach to access the sideyard.
