STAFF REPORT
CITY COUNCIL
DATE: December 17, 2019
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM:
Christopher L. Foss, City Manager
SUBJECT:
Adirondack Chair Temporary Art Display Program Art Selection
Prepared by: Shaun Chilkotowsky, Heritage and Cultural Arts Manager
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will consider artist design proposals, as part of a Temporary Art
Display Program, to paint/decorate Adirondack chairs to be displayed in public places
within the City.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission's artist recommendations for the
Adirondack Chair Temporary Art Display Program.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The estimated cost for the program is $21,690. This includes artist stipends, the cost of
the actual chairs, and miscellaneous supplies to protect the chairs once complete. The
funding source is the Public Art fund, and following the display period, the chairs will be
auctioned off, with the revenue generated being returned to the Public Art Fun d.
DESCRIPTION:
On October 15, 2019, City Council approved the Adirondack Chair Temporary Art
Display program and approved the theme of “New American Backyard." The
Temporary Art Display program will feature 20 Adirondack style chairs that will be
unveiled at the 2020 St. Patrick’s Day Festival, put on display locally, and then
auctioned off at an event in the Fall of 2020.
Staff issued a Call for Artists on October 30, 2019, publicizing the opportunity through
normal City outreach channels (website, social media, etc.), as well as via email to a list
of interested artists, a list of past Dublin utility box artists, registrants in the Cultural Arts
database, nearby art schools, the Dublin Arts Collective and the California Cultural Arts
Council website. The deadline to apply was November 29, 2019.
According to the City of Dublin’s current Public Art Master Plan, all public artwork must
Page 2 of 3
be produced by professional artists or under the direction of a professional artist.
Student artists may work under the guidance of a visual arts teacher or practicing visual
artist, so students applying for the temporary art Adirondack chair project have been
asked to name an adult professional artist who will serve as their sponsor and who is
capable of completing the work should the student artist be unable to do so.
On December 12, 2019, the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission reviewed artists’
proposals for the Temporary Art Display program. A total of 26 artists submitted 41
different proposals.
20 proposals from 18 artists have been recommended by the Heritage and Cultural Arts
Commission for City Council approval. Two of the recommended artists will be
completing a set of chairs, which is why there are 18 artists for 20 chairs. These artists,
plus all the others are:
1. Alexandra Riddle – Orange Succulents

Dublin Adirondack Chair project
The New American Backyard is less about what is mine and what is yours
and more about the use and care of the greater natural world. It is the open
and natural spaces that are around us and considering that these are our
spaces to take care of. The design for my Adirondack chair is colorful, eye
catching, and full of movement. The subject matter and the colors are my
natural "backyard" ....California poppies and California Quail on our
beautiful blue sky background with a shimmer of metallic gold to remind us
of the preciousness of the natural world.

Artist’s Statement (2019)
America’s Backyard, Nickles
America’s Backyard is a representation of the people’s connection to nature. Growing up in Dublin and
loving to explore, there was always a hidden trail to hike down or a hidden beauty to find; and with
having many friends live up in the Dublin hills, many of those wonders could be found right out the
backyard gate. This piece is about the astonishing nature that fills our town. Sometimes we need to sit
down and take it in because many times that beauty can be found even in our own backyard.

Love is Key
Artist Statement
Colleen Gianatiempo
I was inspired by the words "Everything you want, right here in your own backyard': I feel that
when we speak of a community that the most important ingredient is "LOVE" My entry, "Love is
Key" was born out of the hearts that I see in the shamrock of the Dublin City Logo and the recipe
for the most important ingredient in a diverse community.
Entry Two
Down -to -Earth Vibe
Artist Statement
Colleen Gianatiempo
I was inspired by the meaning of "New. American Backyard". The imagery for this concept is ab-
straction and expressing community and connections where you can experience everything you
want in this design, just like in the great town of Dublin.

Artist Statement:
This design would use acrylic paint and was inspired by environmental beauty. I
focused on sunflowers because of how they represent visual optimism. Sunflowers
display a lively spirit to brighten the world by making people smile and feel communal
enthusiasm. The “Welcome to Dublin” design was inspired by travel postcards, and I
added it to showcase the welcoming, positive environment sought out in Dublin. The
center words of the sunflower on the back are ones I feel are important to people in the
community. I included them to remind people of hope and compassion that are
represented in art.

I
I have traveled placed all over the world, but I've never lived anywhere else beside Washington State.
One thing that became very apparent since living here was the wild life that I landed in. Birds, in
particular, are a large part of my artist repertoire. From the blackhawks swirling above, the peacocks
roaming the streets, the hawks nested in the trees outside our house, and all of the hummingbirds I see
daily. Inspiration is flying around me constantly. I plan to paint abstract forms and pay homage to my
inspiration of all mighty aver!

"Bountiful Garden"
My next door neighbor has the most beautiful garden. She invites kids in
our neighborhood to come garden with her, and she teaches them all about
plants in her yard. My daughters even have trees in her yard planted in their
honor. I love that she makes Dublin a beautiful and fun place to live.

"Here Comes The Sun"
A backyard feels like sunshine. Referencing the artwork of famed Disney
artist, Mary Blair, this piece shows an abstract, colorful version of the sun.
The sun symbolizes the happy memories created in a backyard, or in a
community that is as comfortable as a backyard.

"Make A Joyful IN
I love hearing the joyful noises in my backyard. My kids squeal with
delight as they jump on the trampoline, our backyard neighbors share
laughter and a meal with friends, neighbors to the left splash in the pool,
and our right hand neighbor hums as she digs in her garden. These are what
make the memories in our backyard some of the sweetest. I hope that we
consider our community a backyard filled with joyful noises as well.

Temporary Art Project – Adirondack Chairs
I created a design that evokes the vibrant blue skies of California’s sunny weather,
the mesmerizing fluffy white rolling clouds of the Bay area, green rolling hills
around Dublin and native California plants like orange poppies, yellow buttercups
and purple lupine flowers.
White shamrocks and the words “Dublin, California” and the “New American
Backyard” are set against the blue background on the seat section of the
Adirondack chair.
The design is an illustrated homage to Dublin, California and the beautiful
landscape and perfect weather that is right in our backyard.

Artist Statement
I transform barren walls into activated large scale murals that invoke whimsical movements of bright
colors and playful lines. I hope for every wall to be enveloped with color to stimulate the hearts and
minds of viewers to step out of their daily routines. I am inspired via hidden details within the natural
realm that are reoccurring patterns such as a tiny pistol within a flower that reveals thousands of dots
of pollen; or the tip of a dog's nose, like that of pebbles and stones. I open a world that is hidden
within our grasp but often overlooked. I create this experience as a deeper chance to dive into my
subconscious, fluent in emotion to create work that any viewer may grasp.

'The Gathering Place', by Molly Keen
The rendered drawings are whimsical in style and playful in color. American Backyard
represents the convening of neighbors, youth and adults alike, in one place to create long-lasting
memories.
Entitled "The Gathering Place" each color in the designs portrays an individual people and
families within the Dublin community evolving together to create a greater cohesive body. I
designed the art as apart of the chair, sculpture-like, as opposed to a separate painting then placed
upon the chair. I desire to accentuate the curves, lines, and features that it offers.
I view the chair as a place of rest as it evokes reflection and calm. I envision gatherings and
making of memories within and around the chair. Each color within its make up offers an
important quality to the design not complete without the other. I intend that the design will
activate the space around to create movement in the American Backyard.
Shweta Agrawal still remembers the first time she picked up a brush and began painting at the
age of five. For past 17 years, she continues to have same thrill and excitement when she picks up
her palette and brush today. Her enthusiasm and energy have influenced her career towards art.
Shweta strives to fully explore and respond to the timeless beauty that surrounds us all. Her art is
an endeavor to express the profound formulation of mind and being. Working with the softness of
colors of people and vegetation as well as contrast of light and dark, Shweta gets lost in her
paintings. She paints in a signature style, wanting her viewers to discover nature and beauty with
a different perspective. Shweta paints in acrylics and watercolors; her choice of medium allows
her to achieve extra fine detail and complex color enhancements needed to produce visually
stunning image. Shweta is the founder of EverPro Kids Inc., which provides fine art programs to
K-12 students. She has taught many workshops which include easy to follow strategies to make
paintings more interesting and dramatic. Her classes are verbalized in simple to understand terms,
making her teaching incredibly compelling. Shweta has displayed her art works in many art
exhibits as well and open art studios1, also winning a number of juried competitions. Shweta’s
artworks have been selected for exhibits in the Dougherty Station Community Center Art Gallery
in San Ramon. The themes of her exhibit are city street views, neighborhood landscapes, and
abstract. Shweta is currently the Alternate Commissioner of Heritage and Cultural Art Commission
for City of Dublin.
Palm spring
• This is one of my acrylic pieces from a collection of palm trees titles “Rising High”. The
source of inspiration from these series of paintings was from a past vacation to SoCal.
Anytime I stepped outside from the midst of Coachella Valley and turned my head to
the sky, all I could see was the horizon scattered with giant heads of palms trees. This
scene really stood out to me, especially the way the light reflected off the ground onto
the palm trees at dawn.
Original painting – Palm Spring: 20” X 20” Acrylics on Canvas by Shweta Agrawal
Mountain
• This acrylic piece was inspired by a snap of Yosemite that I took when I first came to
California almost 20 years ago. It is a blissful springtime memorabilia of a lavender
garden engrossing the paramount mountains in the background. The purple hue of the
painting combines two significant aspects of nature: the calm stability of blue and the
fierce energy of red. I used a palette knife to contour shadows on the mountain, a fan
brush for the trees, and a variety of brushes for the lavender garden.
Original painting – Serenity(Purple Hue): 16” X 20” Acrylics on Canvas by Shweta
Agrawal
Galaxy
• I initially painted this acrylic piece on a denim jacket that was a part of my 17-year-old
son’s Halloween costume. The infinite number of stars give the piece a sense of
enchantment. As if boiling with stars, the colorful blast of colors in the starry sky is
simply eye candy for the viewer. I painted the background with brushes of varying
levels of thickness and applied the stars with splatter sponges.

SOPHIA LEE
Statement
I am a mixed-media artist.
My work is about creating the movement of organic forms and patterns inspired by
nature. Material curated from refuse often drives the approach of the projects I
pursue. The man-made and natural world informs the themes, colors, and
composition in the work itself. As an artist of two cultural traditions, of the East and
West, I am constantly marrying the duality in my work. The calligraphic gestures of
traditional painting are my brush strokes, even when using bean pods, collecting
coffee lids, painting murals or weaving plastics. The beautiful facades of my layered
work hides my underlying anxiety, concern and love for the environment.
Artists Bio
Sophia Lee was born in Taipei, Taiwan and immigrated to Southern California at age
9. Growing up, she moves between the two places, learning languages and
crossing cultures. She first studied fashion design then switching to fine art/ painting
at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She moved to New York
City and designed and illustrated book covers for St Martin’s Press.
When 911 happened, she put into motion her dream of wandering the world. It was
while she was in a museum in Kyoto, Japan that she realizes she can never stop
creating. Art is the essence of who she is. She has found her voice and there are
lots to say. Her first solo exhibit was held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2007, titled
“l’arabesque.”
Besides showing her work in galleries and other group shows in LA, Portland, NY
and the Bay Area, she also paints murals and installation projects.
Since NYC, she’s lived in LA, Taipei, Portland, Newport Beach, and now San
Francisco.
She recently completed her residency at Journal Building Artist Residency program
and is now part of the Electric Snail Studio in San Francisco.

Proposal Statement
New American Backyard — Inside the Secret Garden
This project continues the theme I had began this past year with the illness that has
taken over my mother’s life. Her love of everything inside the garden is the source of
my inspiration. I want to paint her a beautiful and whimsical “secret garden” where
the flowers are always in perfect bloom. Flowers of any kind will bring a smile as
bright as the sun to her face. The flowers here are not exactly “realistic” but inside
the secret garden, anything is possible. I’d like to paint a second chair that reflects
the moonlit garden as well, yin & yang.

Temporary Public Art- Adirondack Chairs
I visualize on painting the chair with my signature mandala and line designs which are noted for
attention to details and are strongly inspired by the folk and tribal arts of India. Being an artist of Indian
origin and a resident of Dublin CA, I look forward in contributing some art which also reflects and
resonates with the South Asian population living here in the tri valley. My design involves my culture,
aesthetics, emotions and intellect. The chair shall be created as a statement art and be one of its kind. It
will be a significant decorative piece of Art for the exhibit.
ARTIST STATEMENT OF THERESA MULEY
BLUE SKY KITES
“Blue Sky Kites”, created by long-time Dublin resident and artist Theresa Muley, is an Adirondack chair
embracing the theme “New American Backyard”, in that it depicts the lovely blue sky and puffy clouds
over our beautiful City of Dublin. The focal point, colorful kites, represents the joyful nature and
beautiful diversity of the residents of our City. Rather than using acrylic paint, this creation will utilize
wood stain, so that the natural beauty of the wood shines through.
ARTIST STATEMENT OF THERESA MULEY

chair creation celebrating our “New American Backyard”, as it embraces the colors and concepts of the

the hills surrounding our lovely City of Dublin. Rather than using acrylic paint, this creation will utilize

BIOGRAPHY
Usha Shukla was born and brought up in New Delhi, India. From early childhood she was
fascinated by the outdoors. The vibrant colors of the Indian countryside left a strong impression
on her. After a graduate degree in English Literature she went on to get a diploma in Fashion
Design. In 1996 when she moved to San Francisco, California, with her family, she found
everything different except her interaction with nature. In 2005, after a visit to the Louvre Museum
in Paris, she realized her true passion for art. She enrolled in the local community college and
started her formal art education. She completed her Graduate program at the Academy of Art
University, San Francisco, focusing on painting.
Combining her love of nature and passion for art, she paints large abstract paintings in vibrant
colors. She has a unique process of mark making. Instead of conventional tools like brushes and
palette knives, she moves the paint on wood panels using an air blower. Her work is collected by
several local art collectors. She won the 2016-17 Clyde & Co Art Award for Emerging Artists,
San Francisco and her work was exhibited in the Clyde & Co Offices. She has participated in
several juried group and solo shows on the West Coast and has won awards. She has a public art
mural in the city of Livermore, California. Her six paintings are installed in the East County Hall
of Justice, Dublin, CA, commissioned by the Alameda County Arts Commission. Two lamppost
banners of her paintings are currently placed in the Inner Sunset, San Francisco, selected by the
San Francisco Women Artists Gallery. Five of her works are in the permanent collection at the
Sutter Hospital in San Francisco.

Firefly Sunshine
I create abstract paintings that distill the light, the intense colors, and the constant
movement in nature. The Firefly Sunshine design is inspired by my nature walks in
the Emerald Glen Park, Dublin, close to my home. On sunny days I see flowers
reflecting sunshine as if they were hundreds of fireflies dancing and chirping. This
design reflects the energy and activity of Dublin’s diverse and colorful community.

Gracias Sage
I create abstract paintings that distill the light, the intense colors, and the constant
movement in nature. This design Gracias Sage is inspired by the greenery I see on
my walks in and around Dublin city. I am always fascinated by green, the color of
life, renewal, nature, and energy which is aptly seen in the Dublin neighborhood
among the diverse and ever-growing community. Hopefully this design will evoke
the feeling of the “New American Backyard” because of its earth tones, harmonious
color palette, and organic shapes.

Design 3
First Day of Spring
I created the design First Day of Spring after experiencing the colorful Holi festival
of India in Dublin. I am constantly amazed at the diverse community of Dublin
living and supporting each other and celebrating together. It is like all the
different colored flowers blooming together on the first day of spring. The “New
American Backyard” brand is all about people inspiring and supporting each other
irrespective of their beliefs which is showcased in Dublin. Hopefully this design
will evoke non-judgmental and communal feelings in its viewers.

I lived in Dubin at Waterford place in 2002-2003.
When East dublin was starting to build up.
The view from our balcony: rolling Hills, Horses,
cows, Birds & butterflies, morning sunshine, wind
... All fresh. Could see the city building up...
layer after layer..on a steady quick pace...
squad changed, moved, relocated... but is still there!
