HomeMy WebLinkAbout3.2 - 3476 Small Business Saturday 2020 Page 1 of 2 STAFF REPORT CITY COUNCIL DATE: November 17, 2020 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Linda Smith, City Manager SUBJECT: Proclamation in Recognition of Small Business Saturday (November 28, 2020) and Report on Holiday Shop Local Campaign Prepared by: Suzanne Iarla, Management Analyst II EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The City Council will consider proclaiming November 28, 2020, as Small Business Saturday in Dublin. Additionally, the City Council will receive an update on the 2020 Holiday Shop Local Campaign. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Present the proclamation and receive the report on the 2020 Holiday Shop Local Campaign. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: Small Business Saturday Proclamation The national Small Business Saturday campaign was founded by American Express in 2010 to encourage people to support small, local businesses. The event traditionally takes place on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and “Black Friday,” known as the first day of the busy holiday shopping season. However, this year, instead of focusing on a single date, the American Express Shop Small campaign message is aimed to remind customers to support small businesses this holiday season and all year long. Representative(s) for the Dublin Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) are available to accept the proclamation on behalf of all local small businesses. 2020 Holiday Shop Local Campaign Staff is working in partnership with the Chamber on a marketing campaign to encourage people to shop locally. Businesses will be provided with a download-able toolkit with ideas to promote their business and engage with the Discover Dublin page on Facebook. The Discover Dublin page (a joint effort by the City and Chamber) will also Page 2 of 2 feature 12 days of gift-giving ideas that can be purchased in Dublin. This campaign will run from December 2-13, 2020. It is worth noting that this year's “Decorate Dublin” holiday contest as part of the year-round “Discover Dublin” effort is not being held this year due to COVID-19. Instead, efforts will be focused on a marketing campaign to encourage community members to shop locally. STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE: None. NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH: None. ATTACHMENTS: 1. Small Business Saturday Proclamation A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA “Small Business Saturday” November 28, 2020 WHEREAS, the City of Dublin believes that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the glue that holds communities together. According to the United States Small Business Administration, there are over 30 million small businesses in the United States; and WHEREAS, small businesses create nearly two out of three jobs in our national economy; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin supports our local businesses that create jobs, spur economic growth, boost our local economy, and preserve our neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, advocacy groups and public and private organizations across the country have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dublin City Council does hereby proclaim November 28, 2020, as “Small Business Saturday” and urges the residents of this community, and communities across the country to support small businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.
