CITY COUNCIL
DATE: November 17, 2020
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM:
Linda Smith, City Manager
SUBJECT:
Establishing Rules for the Selection of Vice Mayor
Prepared by: Marsha Moore, MMC, City Clerk
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will consider amending the rules for the selection of the Vice Mayor to
remove the reference to the selection occurring at a specific meeting in even years.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Resolution Establishing Rules for the Selection of Vice Mayor and
Repealing Resolution No. 5-96.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
DESCRIPTION:
Resolution 5-96 sets the timing for the selection of the Vice Mayor as the first meeting in
December. Due to changes in state law, the certification of the general municipal
election is not always completed by the first meeting in December.
Section 36801 of the California Government Code states that the selection happen after
the declaration of the general municipal election results by the City Council. The
attached resolution (Attachment 1) repeals Resolution 5-96 (Attachment 2) and amends
the timing for even years to occur at the meeting at which the declaration of election
results is made.
STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE:
None.
