SUBJEC : Report on 2011 Dublin Pride Week Activities and Recognition of Poster Contest
Winners and Pride Week Partners

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The City Council will formally recognize the contributions made by various individuals and
organizations that helped make the 2011 Dublin Pride Week activities into a successful
community event.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
In-kind donations were provided by the following organizations: Amador Valley Industries,
Dublin Lion's Club, Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club, Lowe's, Dublin San Ramon Services
District (DSRSD), Pete's Coffee, Mimi's Cafe, and Zone 7.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council receive the report and formally recognize poster contest
winners and Pride Week partners.

DESCRIPTION:
Dublin Pride Week was celebrated from Saturday, May 7 to Sunday May 14, 2011. A number of
activities and projects were conducted and are summarized below.
Dublin Pride Week Poster Contest
All students from both public and private schools in the. City of Dublin were invited to participate
in this year's Dublin Pride Poster Contest. The students were asked to create posters that
reflected this year's theme "Building a Healthy Community". As in previous years, the
Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club volunteered to coordinate the poster contest, which included
distributing the materials, judging the posters, and distributing the certificates.
Each of the Poster Contest participants will be receiving Certificates of Appreciation. The City
awards first and second prizes to individuals from each of the following grade categories:
Kindergarten-1St grade, 2"d grade-3~d grade, 4th grade-5th grade, 6th grade-8th grade, and gtn
grade-12th grade, as well as an overall grand prize winner. The grand prize winner receives a
$100 Target gift card, the first prize winners receive a$25 Target gift card, and second prize
winners receive a$15 Target gift card. The grand prize, first prize, and second prize winners
also have their posters displayed at the Civic Center and will be presented with Certificates of
Merit. Additionally, a Classroom Award is given in the amount of $200 to the teacher of the
Grand Prize Winner to be used in his or her classroom.

Volunteer Day
Wells Middle School
St. Phillip Lutheran School
Over 270 community volunteers donated significant time and energy to community clean up and
beautification projects on Volunteer Day, Saturday, May 7, 2011. Volunteers met at 8:00 a.m. at
Emerald Glen Park to receive instructions and supplies for the various projects throughout the
community. Volunteers were given reusable shopping bags and $5 in "Carrot Cash" to spend at
the Farmers' Market and were provided snacks, coffee, juice and water as well as muffins
donated by Mimi's Cafe and coffee donated by Peets. At the completion of the projects, all
volunteers were invited to a free barbecue provided by the Dublin Lion's Club.
Volunteer Day consisted of the following projects:
Senior Projects: There were approximately 80 volunteers that made up the separate Senior
Project Teams. The teams were able to assist 20 senior homes with a variety of activities that
ranged from cleaning windows to minor home repair. These projects were coordinated by the
Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, which assists the City in finding Dublin seniors who
are in need of assistance.
Frederickson Elementary School: Approximately 30 volunteers worked at Frederickson
Elementary to paint the curbs around the exterior of the school as welt as do some weeding and
general cleanup.
Fa//on Middle School: The Fallon School's California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) Club
worked on improving the Fallon Middle School landscaping by cleaning out flower beds, pulling
weeds and trimming. The CJSF group totaled more than 40 individuals. ,
John Green Elementary School: Approximately 20 volunteers went to John Green Elementary
to help with weeding and general cleanup of the school.
Non-Profit Assistance Projects: Approximately 20 volunteers went to the Easter Seals
Kaleidoscope School where they helped with blacktop painting, window and floor washing,
weeding, and general cleanup.
City Park Projects: Approximately 50 volunteers assisted with beautification and clean-up
projects at various park locations within the City. For example, manjr volunteers assisted in
wood chip spreading at Ironhorse Trail (near BART), at Fallon Sports Park and at Emerald
Glen. Additionally, volunteers were able to plant more than 40 trees at Emerald Glen Park.

City Creek C/eanups: Approximately 20 volunteers were sent to pick up litter at three of the
City's creeks. South San Ramon Creek, Alamo Creek South and Alamo Creek North were host
to these volunteers.
Food Drive: This year, Dublin Pride Week included a Food Drive. Collection bins were set up at
the two Safeway grocery stores in Dublin to collect non-perishable food items during Dublin
Pride Week. Collection bins were also set up at Volunteer Day. The City was able to collect
more than $2,000 worth of food. All food collected was donated to the Dublin Children's
Emergency Council and the Well Christian Community.
Fitness Challenge
This year, Dublin Pride Week included a fitness challenge to complement this year's theme of
"Building a Healthy Community." The program centered on collecting points for various fitness
or good health related activities that were completed throughout Pride Week. Participants were
asked to keep a daily total and submit it to the City upon completion. The challenge for the
community was to accumulate at least 1,000 points for the entire week, and Staff is happy to
report that the aggregate total for the community was 2,328 points.
B/ood Drive
The community had the opportunity to donate blood to the America Red Cross on Thursday,
May 12, 2011 at the Dublin Civic Center and 18 units of blood were collected.
Bike to Work Day,
Nearly 400 cyclists from Dublin and Pleasanton participated in Bike to Work Day on Thursday,
May 12, 2011. "Energizer Stations" were set up at both BART stations within Dublin to distribute
refreshments, T-shirts, and bags of giveaways to bicyclists participating in the event.
Household Hazardous Waste Event
The City sponsored another successful household hazardous waste drop off event, which was
managed by Amador Valley Industries and held at the Micro Dental, a DTI Laboratory, parking
lot on Arnold Drive on Saturday, May 14th. The City's annual household hazardous waste event
ensures that materials such as paint, used oil, batteries, pesticides and otfier harmful chemicals
are disposed of properly. In total, there were 430 residents that participated and 500 bags of
free compost given away.
Farmers' Market
On Thursday, May 12, 2011, the City and the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association hosted
the Grand Opening of the Farmers' Market. The opening night was a great success! It is
estimated that approximately 3,000 people attended the opening night.
2010 Dublin Pride Week Committee .
At the forefront of this year's activities was the Dublin Pride Week Committee. The Committee
comes together each year to plan and organize each Pride Week activity: This year, the
Committee was made up of various community members and organizational representatives.
