EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Mayor is recommending the appointment of the adult at-large community member to the
Youth Advisory Committee for the term of June 2011 through May 2012.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council confirm the Mayor's appointment to the Youth Advisory
Committee. _

DESCRIPTION:
At its May 17, 2011 meeting, the City Council confirmed that Mayor's appointment of 13 middle
and high school youth along with 3 alternates to the Youth Advisory Committee. Because there
were no applications for the adult at-large community member, the application period for the
adult at-large community member remained open.
Since that time, one application was submitted by Dublin resident Ashley Wolfe. The Mayor
recommends the appointment of Ms. Wolfe as the adult at-large community member.
NOTICING REQUIREMENTS/PUBLIC OUTREACH:
The openings for the Youth Advisory Committee's upcoming term were advertised at the local
middle and high schools, on the City's website and press releases were sent to the Tri-Valley
Herald, Valley Times and CTV.

Answers to above questions:
1. I would like to become a member of the City of Dublin Youth Advisory Committee in order to further encourage
and motivate youth within the community to be successful. Watching children and adolescents succeed and
take leadership roles is a major part of my life as an educator. Finding creative ways to engage youth in
positive ways is a life-long passion of mine.
2. When considering skills I might utilize as a part of the Youth Advisory Committee, I immediately consider my
leadership skills and creativity. As a leader, I believe in giving others the tools they need to be successful. In
my work with teens in the past, I have learned the importance of teaching skills that will help them do things
well all on their own. The other skill I would utilize is creativity. With teens, things quickly get boring. In order
to keep things moving and interesting, I frequently use my creativity to come up with new, fun ways to teach
life lessons or even academic lessons.
Teens in Dublin frequently sufFer from cases of the, "Well what should we do now" syndrome. One of tlie ways
to help this is to create activities for adolescents to participate in that are stimulating and rewarding.
Something I have helped develop in the past is a coalition of teenagers working toward and volunt~ering for a
specific cause they believe in. In this way, you enhance civic engagement, you encourage and foster
leadership, and you develop future volunteers. This also keeps teenagers engaged instead of "looking for
something to do."
4. As a community member and business owner, I will continue working. I do, however, set my own schedule and
would be available throughout the 2011-2012 year.

6. One of the absolute best ways to engage teens in today's day and age is through social media. Facebook
events, twitter, emails, and other forms of online communication have revolutionized the way that young
people are encouraged to participate in activities. Using these forms of social media to popularize, if you will,
the activities of the YAC would be a great start to jumpstarting participation.
