ATTACHMENTS: DESCRIPTION: At the City Council Meeting on December 18, 2007, the City Council directed Staff to research and present recommendations for augmenting the City's Smoking Pollution Control policies and regulations. As part of this direction, Staffwas to prepare an Agenda item for Council's consideration, creating a City policy wherein the City of Dublin would neither accept nor solicit the sponsorship of City events by tobacco companies and tobacco-related entities, and it would neither accept nor solicit tobacco-related advertisements for inclusion within City event publications. The prohibition of tobacco-related funding and advertising refers to funding and/or advertising from a manufacturer, distributor, or retailer whose principal business is related to tobacco products. It is, therefore, proposed that the City Council consider the establishment of a City policy, prohibiting City events from having sponsorship by an organization whose primary business is tobacco product related. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the Resolution. < ^'^^f ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COpy TO: ~^ Page 1 of 1 ITEM NO. 7 I L F:\CounciJ\Agenda Statements\2007 -2008\as-tobacco sponsorship. doc RESOLUTION NO. - 2008 Ii I A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBLIN ********* ESTABLISHING A POLICY PROHIBITING TOBACCO COMPANY SPONSORSHIP OF CITY EVENTS AND CITY EVENT PUBLICATIONS WHEREAS, tobacco use has proven to be an addictive, unhealthy, and harmful habit with significant social and economic costs; and WHEREAS, multiple studies have shown that tobacco product advertising results in increased demand; and WHEREAS, the City's young adult population can be especially vulnerable to tobacco company advertising campaigns; and WHEREAS, the City of Dublin has a substantial interest in promoting and ensuring healthy living and healthy lifestyles for its residents; and WHEREAS, City events are attended by a significant proportion of its residents, who will be exposed to various sponsorship media.
