FINANCIAL STATEMENT: Sufficient funds have been included in the FY08-09 Budget for the Dedication DESCRIPTION: One of the Fiscal Year 2008-2009 high priority objectives adopted by the City Council was to "Conduct park dedication event for Piazza Sorrento and Devany Square". Piazza Sorrento was accepted by the City Council in March 2008 and it is anticipated that Devany Square will be open to the public in late July and accepted by the City Council in August 2008. Given the proximity of the two parks, Staff recommends that a joint park dedication ceremony/grand opening celebration be held. Staff recommends the dates of either Saturday, October 4 or Saturday, October 11 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Although Staff has not yet finalized an event plan, potential components would include a ribbon cutting at Devany Square with a presentation from the City Historian on the history of the Devany family, followed by a procession to Piazza Sorrento for a ribbon cutting and poem composed by the City Poet Laureate. Following the ribbon cuttings, family games would ensue at both parks along with entertainment and refreshments. A commemorative gift would also be distributed. Staff proposes to discuss potential event plans with the Parks and Community Services Commission at its July 21 meeting and bring the recommend event plan back to the Council in August for approval. RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the City Council select a date for the dedication of Piazza Sorrento and Devany Square. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COpy TO: Page 1 of 1 ITEM NO. g .
