Provide Staff with direction on holding a disaster training session for the City Council, and provide Staff with a date that meets the scheduling needs of the City Council. None. DESCRIPTION: The Governor's Office of Homeland Security offers a free two-hour introductory training for elected officials to prepare them for a disaster event. Specifically, the training is focused upon providing councils with an overview of a city's disaster response activities by outlining the efforts and protocols that would be involved. During the seminar, elected officials are instructed on how best to work with city staff during an emergency situation, how to work and interact with other governmental agencies, and how effective preparation determines an effective disaster response. One of the most useful activities during the training is the section on crisis communication. During this section, elected officials are instructed on how to interact with the media and deliver messages that both informs as well as comforts the public. Staff recommends that the City Council attend this training session as it is both informative and cost effective. Staff has contacted the program managers and discovered that the week of February 16, 2009 is available to hold a training session. Staff is requesting feedback from the City Council as to whether an evening during the week of February 16, 2009 would work best with all Councilmember schedules. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council provide Staff with direction on holding a disaster training session for the City Council, and provide Staff with a date that meets the scheduling needs of the City Council. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COPY TO: Page 1 of 1 ITEM NO. • F:\Council\Agenda Statements\2008-2009\as-council disaster training.doc /'A Public Officials Workshop Agenda (Two hour duration) Agenda/Introduction-Review goals of the session and key topics to be covered 2.
