Although I have been a Leadership Advisor at Dublin High School for many years, Megan definitely stood out in 2006 as an outstanding and "responsible" young citizen. Although I have known Megan and her family for many years as active members of our community, I first started working with her when she joined my Student Leadership class in 2006. I immediately became impressed with her positive attitude and high level of dedication, work ethic, maturity, dependability, and creativity. These attributes have made her one of the most valuable members of Leadership, where she has been instrumental as our Special Events Commissioner, managing all of the campus's biggest projects flawlessly. Megan's commitment to excellence in Leadership has carried over to the classroom, where she has done an exceptional job by taking rigorous college-prep courses while still maintaining a very high grade point average. In addition to her success academically and in Leadership, Megan has been involved in several clubs at Dublin High and also competed on both the soccer and swim team. Despite a busy schedule at school, Megan has also demonstrated excellent overall citizenship by being an active volunteer at her church and in the community. She has coordinated Youth Ministry programs at the church she attends, and she has helped plan events for teenagers as an appointee of the Mayor to the City of Dublin's Youth Advisory Committee. Most importantly, Megan has demonstrated tremendous character and integrity, earning respect and admiration from my colleagues on the staff at Dublin High, adults she interacts with, and her peers. Megan's accomplishments have made her the embodiment of all of the traits of the Dublin Pride - Integrity in Action program. It gives me great pleasure to write her a letter of recommendation. Sincerely, /y~ 4.0uJ::. Tim Sbranti Leadership Advisor/Teacher/Coach Dublin High School /), ""2' .;:) \ ,- Z~Z.O-Ol ~ Lauren Ginn - Applicant for Young Citizen of the Year I am nominating Lauren Ginn as young citizen of the year because she embodies the exemplary youth of this city. She displays leadership abilities through her role as treasurer of Dublin 4-H club and also as chairman of several important committees for the club. She excels in her school activities, plays sports for a city soccer team, is thorough when she takes on a responsibility, is respectful and creative. Let me explain: This past year she chaired a fund raising activity for the club. Through her leadership and creativity in marketing we were able to raise enough money to help 3 needy families have a wonderful Christmas. She has chaired our parade float committee and inspired other members to attend and take part. She has helped the Rotary Club with their Child Safety Days booth at the Shamrock Days Festival and worked on the Fun Run. In the past she has helped paint "Drains to the Bay" on curbs to remind people not to dump toxic wastes into the storm drain. (A project our club took on for the Dublin Pride week). At Dublin High, she carries a heavy load of Advanced Placement classes, with a 4.3 grade point average. She is involved in several clubs at school - the Asian Pacific Islander Club which fosters an understanding between youth of Asian Pacific backgrounds. They also raise money to support various school projects. She is in two academic clubs as well - the California Scholarship Foundation and AVID. She has played soccer for Dublin High and for city teams. I know that when Lauren takes on a project or a committee chairmanship - it will be done, and done right. She is organized, realistic, creative, cooperative. She knows what she can handle and doesn't take on something more than she can do. She always communicates promptly. The other members of our club KNOW that when Lauren is in charge they will not be disappointed. She is a great role model for our many younger members. Her career goal is to be involved in culinary arts. Toward this goal she has pursued all of the food related projects we have offered. and has won several awards for her entries at the Alameda County Fair. Having our project members enter the fair is rewarding for us as leaders and having them shovv so much effort, and then winning is wonderful. Therefore, I think you will agree that Lauren has all the qualifications of a well rounded, deserving Young Citizen of the Year for the City of Dublin. Quincey is a student in his junior year, attending Dublin High School. Quincey has been a fantastic volunteer in the Dublin Library's Homework Center. The Homework Center is a non-profit service offered by the Dublin Library to the community as an after school program for young students in grades 3 through 8. The Homework Center provides students a supervised, supportive environment while they are getting some assistance with their homework from high school aged volunteers. High school volunteers are the backbone of the program, providing students with much needed help in Math, Science, Reading and English skills. Average attendance in the Center is between 9 and 15 students a day. The Library requires that volunteers in the Homework Center take the responsibility seriously by committing themselves to work in the Center one day a week for 2 hours from 3:30-5:30 in the afternoon for the ten to twelve weeks of one trimester. Quincey met and exceeded his commitment, working a total of 76 hours during the Winter, Spring and Fall trimesters of 2006. Quincey has worked extra days when the Center has needed additional help. He has proven to be a reliable and consistent volunteer and his attitude while working with young students is respectful, caring and enthusiastic. His positive attitude and eagerness to help students has made him a respected role model. Working with Quincey in the Homework Center and seeing how he gives back to our community has been a privilege and it is with great pride that I am nominating him for Dublin's Young Citizen of the Year for 2006. Through her daily interactions with adults and peers, Mariko earns the respect of all she encounters. Mariko is a fifth grade student here at Frederiksen Elementary. She is kind and giving without self-promotion, simultaneously confident and cooperative, showing leadership without being pushy. Grounded and self-disciplined, Mariko does this all with such grace that her peers would universally select her for this honor if empowered to do so. Through her exemplary modeling of the highest qualities of character, Mariko has touched and improved our community by challenging each of us to raise our own personal standards. While service to the community-at-Iarge can be challenging for our youngest citizens whose mobility is limited by their age, Mariko has made the most of the opportunity to serve within the immediate community of her school. As a 4th grader in 2006, Mariko took the lead in giving a voice to the students of Frederiksen. She wanted to start a student newspaper and took it upon herself to plan and initiate the actions necessary to make this happen. Through her personal efforts she gathered peer support and identified the need for funding and an adult advisor. This led her to prepare a presentation to Frederiksen's PFC which agreed to provide financial support. She successfully recruited a teacher to serve as advisor on this after-school project. This was followed by a marketing campaign to recruit the student staff, and many after-school hours of organizing, guiding, and motivating the team toward a successful launch of our first (and entirely student-run) school newspaper. The project launch was so successful that it continues this year, providing Frederiksen students with an avenue for creative expression and service to their school community. Mariko also served as Master of Ceremonies at Frederiksen's 2006 Veteran's Day Assembly. She guided our students, staff, visiting veterans, and school board attendees through a moving program honoring past and current American soldiers. Her poise, preparedness, and respectful demeanor served as a model for all present that this was a solemn occasion. Through our Peace Cru program at Frederiksen, student leaders guide their peers in negotiating their disputes and disagreements through healthy, productive communication. As a highly effective Peace Cru member, Mariko helped fellow students develop greater skill in personal interactions, embrace diversity in our school community, and build strong, positive bonds among unlikely friends. On top of these contributions, Mariko has been active for years as an artist in the community. As part of the Valley Dance Academy, she devotes many hours each week to ballet practice and performs annually to audiences throughout the Tri-Valley area. Through self-discipline and determination she brings her personal best to this passion while simultaneously demonstrating exceptional achievement in her academic life. There is no doubt that Mariko has enriched the lives of all those around her. Our school is a stronger community for her presence and participation. Most importantly, her impact on the school community reaches into the homes of our students and to the community-at-large. It is her ability to touch and inspire so many people, who in turn will "pay it forward," that propels us to nominate Mariko McCully for "Young Citizen of the Year." . I ... -,".-'. ~ L' \0 Young Citizen of the Year I would like to nominate Justin Paul Minor as Young Citizen of the year. Justin is a freshman at Dublin High School. While attending Wells Middle School he was on the Honor Roll all three years. He also volunteered after school as a tutor for students needing additional assistance. While he was in the 6th grade he was chosen by the People to People Group, an organization to promote goodwill to foreign countries, to be one of their representatives. Justin traveled to Australia where he visited schools and shared our American customs. He gave reports of his trip to the Dublin City Council and the Dublin School Board. He has been a volunteer with Officer Romer of the Dublin Police Dept. at Bicycle Bike Rodeos. Last fall he volunteered at Mervyns special day when clothing is given to needy children. While he was there he assisted in preparing the breakfast and in helping the children write their thank you letters. Justin has been on the City of Dublin's Youth Council for the past two years. As a member of that group he has volunteered for many activities such as the Day on the Glen and at the St. Patrick's Festival. Justin was a member of the freshman football team at Dublin High School this year and as their community service project they placed markers on the storm drains to remind the people that this water feeds to our waterways. He was awarded a scholastic letter in football. Justin is a Boy Scout, which is another way he can demonstrate responsibility and self-discipline. He is a member of the Tri-Valley Adolescent Health Initiative Youth Planning Board. This committee prepared and analyzed more than 4250 surveys taken from the Middle Schools and High Schools in Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton. The project is designed to help the youth in the three cities address health and social problems they confront. The project was begun in 2005 and will continue through 2007. On January 24th the Tri-Valley Adolescent Health Initiative was presented to City, School, and health representatives as well as other leaders ofthe communities. The sincerity and caring was obvious as the Youth Leaders gave their presentations. They care for the youth our communities and are trying to help the youth of today as well as the youth of the future. It is for the above reasons I have nominated Justin Paul Minor for the award of Young Citizen of the Year. \ To Whom It May Concern, We would like to nominate our son, Michael Pecota, for the Young Citizen of the Year award. Mike is 17 years old, a Dublin High School Junior, a member of the Dublin High Jazz Band, an Explorer with the Dublin Police Department, a Neighborhood Watch Block Captain, and a member of the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee. As an Explorer, Mike is involved in many community service volunteer activities. Mike's favorites involve working with children in Dublin, educating them at the various Bicycle Rodeos throughout the City on bicycle safety. He has also worked with the children at Fredrickson Elementary using a portable stoplight to teach them to stop at a red light. Mike has also assisted the Police Department in fingerprinting children at various community events throughout Dublin. Just before Christmas, Mike had the privilege to assist the Police Department with dropping off Christmas gifts to underprivileged children here in Dublin. Mike does his best to make time in his busy schedule to help the Dublin Police Department whenever he can. Earlier this year Mike and the Explorers were acknowledged by Alameda County Sheriff Plummer for their volunteer efforts. Mike is the youngest Neighborhood Watch Block Captain in Dublin. His biggest accomplishment last year was the Neighborhood Watch National Night Out Barbeque he put together on August 1st. During the event, Mike received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his efforts from Congressman Richard Pombo. (photo enclosed). Congressman Pombo's staff member is on the left hand side of the picture, Officer Roemer is in the middle, and Mike is to the right with his certificate in hand. As the Neighborhood Watch Block Captain, Mike has put out bulletins to the homes in his Neighborhood Watch Area informing the neighborhood of various crimes in our neighborhood. Mike has encouraged neighbors with older cars to purchase club-like devices to help prevent older cars from being taken from our neighborhood. Mike has reminded neighbors to keep valuables out-of-sight in cars, keeping car doors locked and keeping garage doors closed, etc. as these are problems in our neighborhood. Mike is an active member of the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee and volunteers at various events. The highlight last year was his being on a committee that set-up the City of Dublin's Teen Website. Mike is also a member of the Dublin High Jazz Band where he plays drums and trombone at various fundraising events. This past spring Mike played with the jazz band at a major fund raiser for the Dublin Partners in Education at the Shiners' facility in Livermore. Mike likes to help the community and his neighbors when he is needed. Mike is extremely dependable and very conscientious. Thank you for your consideration. Joe and Debbie Pecota 6107 Ledgewood Terrace 925-551-5966 .I -"I \ ,-.' Mike Pecota has demonstrated community responsibility by starting and organizing our neighborhood watch program. He is the youngest Neighborhood Watch Block Captain in Dublin. This year he organized the Neighborhood Watch National Night Out Barbeque held on Aug. 1 st. He held a planning/organizing meeting prior to the event and when the turnout was small, took on most of the organizing/planning/coordinating of the actual event himself. During the event Mike received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Richard Pombo for his efforts and was presented with the certificate at the end of the event by a staff member. The event was a huge success. It gave many of the neighbors an opportunity to meet for the first time. The children were kept entertained by Mike and the fun games he had . organized for them. At the end of the evening the Dublin Police and Fire Departments arrived to meet the neighborhood, talk about the importance of the Neighborhood Watch Program and congratulate Mike on the success of his event. As the Neighborhood Watch Block Captain, Mike has distributed bulletins to the homes in his neighborhood watch area to keep us informed of crimes happening in our area. When Mike's car was stolen from in front of his home he sent out a notice to the neighbors to inform them and suggested that those neighbors with older model cars purchase club-like devices to help prevent them from being stolen. Mike has also reminded neighbors to keep valuables out of sight in their cars, keep their car doors locked and garage doors closed to help prevent further crimes from being committed in the neighborhood. Mike is an Explorer with the Alameda County Sheriff and frequently offers his time and efforts to the city of Dublin. Mike and the other Explorers were acknowledged by the Alameda county Sheriff earlier this year for their volunteer efforts. Examples of Mike volunteer activities in 2006 included assisting with set-up and tear-down and helping during various Bicycle Rodeos throughout Dublin and assisting the Dublin Police Dept. with a toy giveaway to children in a low-income housing project here in Dublin. Mike is an active member of the Dublin Youth Advisory Committee and volunteers at their various events. One of the highlights of being a part of this committee in 2006 was assisting in the set-up of the City of Dublin's Teen Website. Mike is also a member of the Dublin High Jazz Band where he plays drums and on occasion the trombone at various fundraising events. Mike is always happy to assist the community and his neighbors whenever needed. He is extremely dependable and very conscientious. He has demonstrated that he is a caring and giving person through his volunteer activities and always has a positive attitude. Tiffany is a student in her...juniGr year at Dublin High School. She has been a volunteer in the Dublin Library's Homework Center for two years. In 2006, Tiffany contributed 66 hours of volunteer time in the Center, coming in one day a week for 2 hours at a time during the Winter, Spring and Fall trimesters. The Homework Center is a free, drop-in service available to children in grades 3 to 8. The Center provides a safe and supportive atmosphere for youngsters to complete their daily school assignments. High school volunteers are the backbone of the program, providing students with much needed help in math, science, reading and English skills. Average attendance in the Center is between 9 and 15 students a day. The Library asks that volunteers in the Homework Center take the responsibility seriously by committing themselves to work in the Center one day a week for 2 hours from 3:30-5:30 in the afternoon for the 10 to 12 weeks of one trimester. Over the course of 2006, Tiffany has not only reliably fulfilled this commitment, but has worked more than the minimum requirement. Indeed, there are many days when Tiffany makes herself available "on call" in case of the absence of other volunteers. She is never late and takes ownership, pride and satisfaction in her work and in the work of the Center. Tiffany's responsibility and reliability has been a major factor in making the Homework Center such a success during 2006. Tiffany conducts herself with great caring towards the students, fellow volunteers, and staff. Her respectful demeanor and positive attitude has made her an exemplary role model for the younger students to witness. She takes initiative in helping students; she doesn't wait to be asked, but notices when a student is having a struggle and quietly goes over to help. Her presence is very nurturing and the children have grown to trust and rely on her. Tiffany always puts her best foot forward. She is a good student and shares that ethic easily with the younger children in the Center. She is straightforward and honest with the students, volunteers and staff. Tiffany has proven herself invaluable to our program with her dedicated and enthusiastic manner as she reaches out to help these students. Wells Middle School \ "A California Distinguished School" 6800 Penn Drive Kathy Rosselle, Principal Dublin, California 94568 925 828-6227 Steve Martin, Vice Principal To whom it may concern, On behalf of many of the students and staff of Wells Middle School would like to nominate Cindy Leung for Dublin's 2006 Citizen of the Year. Ms. Leung has held the position of Community Liaison at our school for two years. In that period of time she has seemingly accomplished five years worth of work. Cindy has, on many occasions been described as the Ambassador of Wells Middle School. She wholeheartedly embraces our school vision and carries our message out to the greater community. While she may be an employee of the district, the extra hours she spends often cause some to assume she is a volunteer. What follows is a list of accomplishments that we hope will illustrate the many instances where Cindy has gone above and beyond her duties during the fours hours a day for which she is contracted. Through Ms. Leung's numerous contacts our school and others have received a plethora of office and classroom materials, including furniture. She has been quite successful in obtaining school materials for Title I students. Any individual who has had the good fortune of being contacted by Cindy, come away from the experience a better person by being gently reminded of their generosity and goodwill. She consistently succeeds in her goal of improving the lives of all she meets. As part of our school's outreach efforts, Cindy spent a year organizing our Latino Family Fiesta. She secured all of the food, created all of the marketing materials, arranged for various community partners to provide services and information, booked the entertainment, and managed all of the set up and presentations. Anyone who attended the event would classify it as an unquestionable success. Thanks to Ms. Leung's efforts Wells Middle School has received media coverage previously unknown to Dublin. Talent shows, drama productions, special guests or presentations in classrooms, as well as community service projects have been shared with our community thanks to Ms. Leung. Cindy has proven time and again that when she calls someone, things happen. Cindy Leung's reach is not limited to Dublin. She has organized a number of collections of various materials that have been sent to military personnel serving overseas. She has been our diplomat for numerous projects we have done with many community and world-wide organizations. Cindy has been a resident of Dublin for many years and has blessed this town with two outstanding citizens in her and her wonderful husband Don's daughters, Shannon and Katie. An argument could be made that the entire family is deserving of this honor. Cindy Leung is always looking for ways to make Wells a better school for students, staff and parents. Every endeavor she commits to is done properly with style and grace. She does not miss a detail and if an obstacle arises, she finds a way through it, around it, or over it always wearing a smile. Her uplifting, can-do spirit permeates the school and, in turn, the city of Dublin. In closing, a personal note. As an offspring of two past recipients (Ted and Virginia Woy) and brother-in-law to another (Steve Jones) of this prestigious honor, I believe I can recognize an individual worthy of this award. Cindy Leung fits the bill. Mark Woy Dean of Students 'i ' , \0 \ Dublin Pride - Integrity in Action Mr. Derek Ngai Please consider Mr. Derek Ngai for Dublin Citizen of the Year. Derek embodies each of the Dublin Pride characteristics through his dedication to school programs. He has been instrumental in getting the new Fallon School "up and running", starting many new programs and continuing with District programs. He is involved in the PFC, as Co- Vice- President, and is an active committee member for each event. Often, parents will see Derek at drop-off, then again at pick-up; he has been at school for the entire day. Derek is respectful, responsible, and he truly cares about students. Most of the staffat Fallon know who he is, and have worked with him. He is respected by Tess Thomas, Principal and Jim Freeland, Vice Principal. He has the respect of the entire Fallon PFC, President Mike Bouchard and Co-Vice President Lisa Wong, as well as the numerous Fallon Parent Volunteers. He is the always the first person to jump on board with an energetic, positive attitude. He seems to know what needs to be done and does his personal best to achieve it. Follows is a list of the committees and programs that Derek has been involved in this past year: · Science Fair - Spring 2006 - he was the liaison between Fallon and all of the other Dublin & Pleasanton schools. · Spring Carnival- Spring 2006 - A fun day for students and families that doubled as a fundraiser. · Math/Engineering Night as an extension of the S is for Science Program - Fall 2006 - attended by 200 families · GATE Multicultural Faire - Winter 2007 - Joint event with Fallon & Dougherty. · Fundraisers such as Denim & Diamonds Gala and the Read-A- Thon- Provided teachers & staff with funds for classroom supplies, library materials, and fine arts programs. Funding is also for Science, ASB, and Soul Shoppe Assemblies. · Spirit Wear & Friday Ice Cream Sales · Newsletter & PFC Communication to the Parents While many of these activities and events are specific to Fallon, the direct impact on the community cannot be ignored. By giving so much of his personal effort and time, the events are always a success, and this has built a tremendous sense of community in a relatively new area of Dublin. Fallon has become a top level school, which makes for successful, well-rounded students and supportive, active families. These students will attend Dublin High School and will join the City of Dublin as educated young adults. Also note that Derek put forth this same dedication and energy to Dougherty Elementary during it's early years. Surely Derek will assist with the brand new Green Elementary, scheduled to open Fall 2007. Thank you for your consideration. Derek Ngai is worthy of this distinguished award. Mike & Tricia Bouchard
