F:\Council\Agenda Statements\as-Pride Week 2007.doc
Previously, the Committee developed a branding logo that the community could associate with Dublin
Pride Week. The attached brochure (Attachment 1) and informational flyers utilize this branding logo
"Our City, Our Home" with the 2007 slogan "Planet Dublin!" The slogan is an effort to recognize
Dublin's contribution to the global community and encourages people to work to improve our world
through environmental awareness and volunteerism as supported by the Dublin Pride Week activities.
The proposed 2007 Dublin Pride Activities are as follows:
Poster Contest:
The poster contest has been a Dublin Pride Week tradition for many years. The Dublin San Ramon
Women's Club has again volunteered to organize and manage the contest. The Poster Contest is open to
all Dublin students grades K-12. Winning artwork will be displayed at the Civic Center. Awards will be
handed out at a Dublin City Council Meeting.
School Giveaways:
Dublin Pride promotional items will be given to each child that attends school in Dublin. This year's
items include shamrock zipper pulls and mood pencils that change color with heat for all school aged
children.
Canned Food Drive:
Collection bins will be set-up at the two Safeway grocery stores within Dublin to collect non-perishable
items as part of volunteer day activities on April 28th with all food collected to be donated the Alameda
County Food Bank.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection:
Dublin residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste free of charge and also pick up
free compost for their personal use. The event will be held at 5601 Arnold Drive (comer of Arnold and
Central Parkway) on May 5th. An announcement with reservation information (Attachment 4) was mailed
to all residents in March.
E-Waste Collection:
A free e-waste collection service will be provided on April 28th where computers, televisions, and other
electronic goods can be dropped off.
Volunteer Day Projects:
Volunteer Day (Attachment 2) is scheduled for Saturday, Apri128 and will conclude with a free BBQ at
Mape Memorial Park provided by the Dublin Lion's Club. All volunteers will also receive a free "2007
Dublin Pride Week" t-shirt. Volunteer Day projects include the following:
Senior Assistance Projects
Volunteers will be helping elderly citizens take care of home maintenance projects such as painting,
cleaning, yard work, washing windows, etc.
SchoollmprovementProjec~
Volunteers will choose from designated school beautification projects. Activities may include painting,
repairs, cleaning, etc.
Page 2 of3
Nature Day Activities:
Nature Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 5th and will include a guided nature walk by the East Bay
Regional Park District Ranger Katie Colbert along the Tassajara Creek Trail, followed by a Wildlife
Presentation by a representative from the Lindsey Wildlife Museum. A flyer is included as Attachment 3
with additional information about the walk and presentation.
Fairy Ring:
As part of the new Shannon Community Center, the Dublin' Pride Week Committee requested that
opportunities for donor names be included in the project. This request was attached to the gazebo removal
and redesign. Specifically, the gazebo will be removed and be replaced with a thematic re-creation of a
"fairy ring" from Irish folklore. The ring will be in the form of a circular bench approximately 20 feet in
diameter surrounded by a ring of relocated maple trees from the back of the existing building with an
interior paved area. The bench will be made of concrete that can be sandblasted with donor names similar
to the bench in the Civic Center courtyard. The sandblasting will be provided at cost plus $5.00 with all
excess revenue to be donated to the Alameda County Food Bank (the order form is included as Exhibit A
of Attachment 1).
Public Outreach:
The success of Dublin Pride Week is largely dependent on the outreach campaign developed to increase
the community's awareness and participation in the activities and volunteer opportunities. This year's
public outreach efforts include:
· Web site - www.dublinurideweek.com. The web site was developed by citilinks as a way
for participants to obtain up-to-date information on the various activities and volunteer
opportunities surrounding Dublin Pride Week. The web site also includes a place for
volunteers to sign up to participate in any of the events. The web site is highlighted on all
other outreach materials listed below.
· Promotional posters - Dublin Police and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce will
distribute posters that have been printed by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation for area
businesses and schools.
· Newsletters - Announcements will appear in school newsletters, City's merchant
newsletter, Chamber of Commerce newsletter, and DSRSD newsletter.
· Press releases will be sent to area newspapers.
· CTV Video "Spots" to appear on cable channel 30. New spots were filmed this year.
· Brochure- Dublin Pride Week brochure (Attachment 1) will be distributed to all
community and faith based organizations in the City and placed at strategic locations
throughout the City.
· Flyers - The Volunteer and Nature Day flyers (Attachments 2 and 3) along with other
outreach materials will be sent to various targeted audiences within the community.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Council receive the 2007 Dublin Pride Week Activities Report.

A circular concrete bench "Fairy Ring" will be built at the new
Shannon Community Center.
The name fairy ring comes from an old folk-tale. People once
believed that mushrooms growing in a circle followed the path made
by fairies dancing in a ring. Fairy rings are found in open grassy
places and in forests. A fairy ring is a group of
mushrooms growing in a circle. Each
succeeding year the ring of mushrooms will
be larger than in the previous year.
Now I you can have your name or
message permanently engraved
onto the "1~airy ring" concrete
bench.
Once you decide upon the block size you want, PRINT your inscription in the spaces
provided on the back of this form.
....
Place one letter or space per box (No Exceptions).
