lVHEREAS, Relay for life is a unique community event that recognizes individuals who have survived
cancer as well as honors those who have lost their life to the disease; and
ltlHEREAS, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and
ltlHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health
organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving /iues,
and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service; and
ltlHEREAS, the Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event and means by which the
organization accomplishes its mission, and
'WHEREAS, Dublin has the pleasure of hosting its eleventh Relay For Life on June 10 -11,2006, of which
there are nearly 4,200 events nationwide, to honor cancer survivors, educate the general public about the
importance of early detection and prevention of cancel', and raise funds in the fight against cancer.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL VED, that I Janet Lockhart, Mayor of Dublin, on behalf of the entire
City Council do hereby proclaim June 5 - June 12, 2006 the "Dublin Relay For Life Week" and urge our
citizens to participate in this effort to eradicate cancer as a major health prohlem by preventing cancer,
saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.
