Authorization to Solicit Bids for Contract 04-12,
Street Light Pole Replacement, Phase 3
Report Prepared by: Melissa Morton, Public Works Director
ATTACHMENTS:
Specification to be available at City Council Meeting
RECOMMENDATION:
~
Authorize the solicitation of bids for Contract 04-12,
Street Light Pole Replacement, Phase 3
FINANCIAL STATEMENT:
The construction budget for this project is $217,140 and will be paid
out ofthe City's General Fund.
DESCRIPTION: This is the third year of a proposed four-year project to replace the
old painted steel street light poles in subdivisions that were constructed in the 1960's. These
ungalvanized poles have deteriorated over time and many are corroded to the point of needing
replacement. The project was originally conceived as a five- to six-year project; however, the work has
been escalated due to the potential risk caused by the deteriorated poles. Approximately 80 poles have
been replaced in the first two phases of the project, and an additional eight to ten poles have been replaced
through the City's street light maintenance contract with Alameda County. It is now proposed to replace
the remaining 280 poles over the next two years.
The 2004-05 project is anticipated to replace approximately 140 poles in the area east ofI-680 and west of
Village Parkway. The actual quantity of poles replaced may be adjusted upward or downward, depending
on the bids received. The new poles would be constructed of galvanized steel, which has an estimated life
span of 60 years or more. The galvanized poles would reduce ongoing maintenance costs (approximately
$20,000 per year) by eliminating the need to paint the poles every five years.
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the solicitation of bids for Contract 04-12, Street Light
Pole Replacement, Phase 3.
